Mr. Karanbir Singh and his wife, Mrs. Akshata Desai, are both doctors at Apex Hospital, Jalandhar. While Dr. Singh is a neurologist, his wife is an endocrinologist. They are proud parents of Shiv Nanak Singh and Nyra Singh, class 3 and UKG students at Apeejay Mahavir Marg respectively. In an interview, Dr. Singh recounts his days as a student at the school and lists reasons for choosing the school for his children as well. Edited excerpts:

Why did you choose Apeejay Mahavir Marg ahead of other schools for the admission of both the children?

Tradition! (laughs). Well, I am myself an alumnus of Apeejay Mahavir Marg. It is a very good school. I studied here from Nursery till class 12. I was the city topper – first in Jalandhar and second in Punjab. Now when I go to the school to pick my children, many old memories get revived. I have an emotional attachment with my school and so, I wanted my children to study here and grow in the same nurturing environment.

Plus, this school has retained the values of the past. It is a very well-established school that is rich in experience. In many of the new schools, the academic part lags behind, as the focus is more into the co-curricular activities. This however is never the case with Apeejay Mahavir Marg.

Please tell us a bit about Nyra and Shiv Nanak and take us through their progress at school?

Nyra is doing very well at school. She goes to play football in the evening and has also started to learn swimming recently. She likes all the subjects equally as of now. Shiv Nanak is also doing well in the school. He is a very naughty kid but he likes all his subjects and has been performing well.

Are the teachers engaging well with the students?

Yes, the teachers are teaching very well. I would like to name my daughter’s class teacher, Ms. Sarika Khosla. She is an excellent teacher.

What is the best thing about the school?

I think it is the balance between academics and co-curricular activities. The school has a bit of strictness as well. It is a rare school which finely balances all parameters equally. It never lets the students go haywire.

How has the experience of the online classes been for the children?

It was a tough time for the entire world. But the school was able to manage things well. All the online classes happened timely and very smoothly.

Now that the school has reopened, are both the children happy to be back at the school?

Yes, they are more than happy.
