The marriage of my mother’s brother took place in May. My entire family, including cousins and relatives, received warm invitations to attend this grand and memorable event. It was the most splendid and enjoyable wedding I had ever attended, bringing immense joy and mirth to everyone involved.

On the wedding day, my uncle’s house was adorned with multi-colored flowers, bunting, and balloons. We were served with sweets, dry fruits, and coffee. In the evening at 4 pm, various ceremonies and the departure of the baraat were conducted. The atmosphere was filled with joy and cheer, with everyone dressed in their best attire.

The priest placed a flower-decked coronet on the bridegroom’s head, initiating dancing and singing among the women. The bridegroom, adorned and riding a horse decorated with silver ornaments, led the procession. The city’s best band played tunes from modern films, creating a festive atmosphere. The baraat, comprising lively young boys and girls, danced along the way, accompanied by drumbeats and the bursting of crackers. The father of the bridegroom threw handfuls of paisa, attracting the attention of many children, while onlookers eagerly observed the procession from both sides of the road.

Upon reaching the bride’s house, the decorations were beyond description, with multi-colored bulbs, flowers, and buntings transforming it into a paradise. The seating arrangements were made under a large canopy, and the baraat received a heartfelt reception.

The priest recited verses from the scriptures, and the fathers of the bride and bridegroom embraced each other amidst cheers. Photographs were captured by an automatic camera. The dowry, including household items and luxurious gifts like a television set, refrigerator, and a car for the bridegroom, was arranged in a spacious room. The marriage was solemnised with Vedic mantras before the holy fire, and in the early dawn, the bride tearfully bid farewell to her original parents to start a new life in her in-laws’ house.
