Parth Munjal, a class 2 student at Apeejay Svran Global School, Faridabad, recently won a green belt in Karate.  The green belt is the fourth belt in the martial art form, with the white, yellow and orange belts preceding it. In an interview, the karate prodigy shares the secrets behind his lightning progress.

At what age did you start learning Karate?

I have been learning Karate since last year when I was six years of age. There is a park just below my house, where some children used to learn Karate. I saw them and got very fascinated. Soon my parents enrolled me in a Karate academy as well. I go to the Shotokan Martial Arts Federation of India. I practice there regularly.

Is karate your hobby or do you aim to be a professional Karate master one day?

No, it is not my aim to be a professional in Karate (Laughs).  I am pursuing it as a hobby. My parents had initially encouraged me to learn Karate as a form of self-defence.  I am enjoying learning this skill as of now.  I like to practice and get better every day.

How does the school help you in pursuing your hobby?

My class teacher Ms Neeru Dhal gives me extra classes on weekends whenever I have a class which clashes with my Karate practice.  The school ensures that I don’t miss out on my studies.

What is your favourite martial arts film?

Kung Fu Panda is my favourite martial arts film. I recently saw it on television with my father. We enjoyed it a lot.

How did you advance to the green belt so early and at such a young age?

I was clear with all the Katas (basic foundation in Karate) since the beginning. Kapil sir, my mentor at Shotokan Martial federation of India, encouraged me after seeing this. So he soon promoted me for the white, yellow and orange belt tests respectively. The tests took place quickly and I cleared all of them with flying colours. I have won four belts within a year.

“We want the best for our students. Their safety is at the top of the list which is why self-defence training is a critical component of every child’s education. In addition to improving their safety, self-defence training fosters self-assurance, self-respect and self-confidence. Acquiring these essential personality traits can help them to empower themselves and have a positive effect on their lives.”
