NTA testing AI-powered helpline to answer students queries

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is developing an artificial intelligence-enabled helpline to answer candidates’ questions about entrance examinations, application procedures and other exam-related matters. The facility is meant to make information easier for students to reach at a time when many depend on the agency for clarity on official processes.
According to media reports, NTA is repurposing the toll-free number 1800 180 47 47 for the AI service. The helpline is currently under testing, and an official announcement on its public launch is awaited.
The number was earlier used by the High Power Task Force (HPTF) headed by Nandan Nilekani, which collected suggestions from the public on examination reforms. With that exercise complete, the line is now being developed for student assistance.
The service is expected to help candidates get answers to common questions on exam procedures, registration, eligibility requirements and application forms. An AI-based system could spare students from searching through several web pages or contacting support centres for routine queries.
It may also widen access for candidates from different linguistic backgrounds. However, the languages it will support, its exact capabilities and the timeline for rollout have not been officially confirmed.
The move comes as the NTA continues to face calls for better exam management, greater transparency and stronger candidate support. The HPTF has been studying reforms to strengthen how competitive examinations are conducted.
An AI-enabled helpline could serve as an additional channel for student concerns, especially during application and examination periods, when candidates often seek clarity on official procedures and deadlines.
