Designing a path in architecture
The profession is shifting, and young architects must be ready to learn, communicate, collaborate, and adapt
Architecture has always been considered a profession that combines creativity, technical knowledge, and problem-solving. But for young architects entering the field today, the demands of the profession are changing quickly. It is no longer enough to have good design ideas alone. The ability to adapt, learn new tools, and work well with different people has become equally important.
Dinesh Kumar Mahawar, an alumnus of the Apeejay Institute of Technology- School of Architecture and Planning, says that young architects should understand that the market is changing and design today depends a lot on advanced software. “They should be comfortable with high-end design tools and should be willing to keep learning as the industry evolves,” he said.
From concept development and 3D modelling to presentations and project coordination, technology is now central to how architectural work is imagined and executed. Students and fresh graduates who invest time in learning these tools are likely to be better prepared for professional practice.
At the same time, architecture is not a solitary profession. Even the best design has to move through several stages before it becomes a built project. This requires constant interaction with different stakeholders.
“Communication and interpersonal skills are very important. Architecture is not only about design; it also involves working with clients, contractors, site teams, consultants, and colleagues. Good communication and interpersonal skills help architects coordinate better, resolve issues faster, and ensure that projects move smoothly,” the 2010 batch alumnus shared.
For young professionals, this means learning how to explain ideas clearly, listen carefully, respond to feedback, and handle practical challenges on site. A successful architect must be able to balance creativity with coordination and patience.
The career path in architecture can be demanding, but it also offers immense scope for growth. Those who remain curious, open to technology, and confident in working with people will be better placed.
