It’s not every day that a student in Class 9 becomes a published author. But Kyra Singh, a bright and imaginative student from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, has done just that. Her debut novel A Party Behind the Doors, published by Bri Books, is a clever and creative story about secrecy, exploration, and the challenges of adapting to new surroundings. In this candid conversation she opens up about her writing journey, her love for Hermione Granger, and how a quiet moment on her bed turned into the spark of a published story. Read edited excerpts:

Tell us about your book, A Party Behind the Doors. What’s the story?

It’s about a family that moves to a new city. The children in the family don’t really like their new school, their neighbours, or the unfamiliar environment. But one day, they find a secret room in their new house. They don’t tell their parents about it. Instead, they plan a party there with their new classmates to make friends. The story revolves around the fun and the disasters of that secret party.

What inspired you to think of such an imaginative plot?

Honestly, I just wanted to write a book. At first, I was unsure, but my English teacher told me, “You can write, you should write.” So I started. I was just lying on my bed when this idea popped into my head – a party in a secret room! There wasn’t any specific inspiration, it just came to me suddenly.

How did your classmates react when they saw your book?

They were really excited! Many of them said it was nice and wanted to read it. Quite a few of them actually read the whole book and enjoyed it. That made me really happy.

Do you plan to write another book?

Yes, I’m thinking of writing something different now – not fiction, but a book based on random and relatable incidents that happen in our everyday lives. It won’t be a story exactly, but more like a book that talks to the reader.

Did your school support you during this journey?”

Initially, I wasn’t willing to write the book at all. I had doubts about whether I could do it. But my English teacher kept encouraging me. She said, “You must write.” So even though I didn’t have much interest at the beginning, I finally gave it a try. And I’m glad I did.

Are you fond of reading books yourself? Any favourites?

Yes, I love reading! I’m currently reading the Harry Potter series, and I absolutely love it. I really like Hermione Granger—she’s intelligent and cool, and I admire that about her.

You seem quite like Hermione yourself—smart and confident. Would you agree?

(Laughs) Yes, I think so. I like that comparison!

From a spark of imagination to a published title, Kyra Singh’s journey is a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one encouraging voice—and a secret room—to discover a world of possibilities.
