“Drawing Emotions, Dreaming in Colour”

There’s a quiet magic in the way Shivangee Darad holds her pencil. A Class 8 student at Apeejay School, Kharghar, she’s already gaining attention for her growing body of artistic work—especially her latest piece inspired by The Girl with the Pearl Earring. As the Apeejay Aspiring Artist of the Week, Shivangee speaks with joy and ease about her evolving art journey, her fondness for anime, and the creative support she finds in her school. Read edited excerpts:

Since when did you start drawing?
I’ve been drawing since I was really young. I can’t even remember exactly when, but it’s always felt like a natural part of my life. It stuck with me as I grew, and I just kept exploring it more and more.

Which art form is your favourite and why?
Right now, I’m loving anime-style drawing. It’s super creative and expressive. I enjoy how you can bring emotions to life and build characters that have their own personality. I’m still learning, but it’s a lot of fun.

How does Apeejay Kharghar support you as an artist?
Apeejay Kharghar is really encouraging when it comes to art. My art teacher has been especially supportive—she’s kind, patient, and always pushes me to try new things. The school also gives us platforms like exhibitions and competitions. It’s great to be in an environment that values both academics and creativity.

What does art mean to you personally?
For me, art is a way to relax and express myself without having to explain everything in words. I like how it gives me space to be free and creative. It’s just something I genuinely enjoy doing in my free time.

How long does one artwork usually take you? What do you like to draw?
It really depends on what I’m working on. Some pieces take 2–3 hours, others can take longer. I don’t always stick to one theme, but I often draw characters with emotions, and I like adding fantasy or dreamy elements when I feel inspired.

Are you working on any new pieces right now?
Not at the moment, but I feel something new coming soon! I usually create whenever inspiration strikes, so the next drawing might just happen unexpectedly.

Is there any new art form you’d like to explore?
Yes! I’d love to learn realism. It’s so detailed and powerful. It would be exciting to challenge myself and grow into that style.

Any other hobbies apart from art?
I enjoy sports and have a big love for English—whether it’s reading, writing, or playing around with words. Creativity, in any form, makes me feel happy.
