OpenAI expands ChatGPT Plug-ins with app like interfaces and automations

OpenAI is expanding the capabilities of ChatGPT plug-ins, allowing developers to build more app-like experiences directly within the AI chatbot. The company announced the changes during its DevDay presentation, as it looks to turn ChatGPT into a platform where users can interact with external applications without leaving the conversation.

OpenAI already allows ChatGPT to connect with services such as Slack, SharePoint, Airtable and Google Drive through plug-ins. The new extensions are designed to go beyond simple connections by giving integrated applications a dedicated space within the ChatGPT sidebar.

Developers will also be able to create interactive panels that allow users to work with connected tools while continuing to chat with ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, these experiences can also include file viewers capable of supporting the formats used by individual developer products.

The changes could make the distinction between an AI assistant and traditional software less clear. Instead of switching between multiple applications to complete a task, users could increasingly interact with those services through ChatGPT while using natural-language instructions alongside the tools themselves.

Alongside the new interfaces, OpenAI is introducing a Plugin Creator tool aimed at making it easier for developers to build plug-ins.

The company is also redesigning the process through which developers submit their plug-ins to the directory, with clearer feedback during the submission process. At the user end, OpenAI says it has improved how plug-ins are ranked and recommended, both within the directory and when they are surfaced during conversations.

Another change will give users more control over permissions. When connecting a plug-in, users will be able to approve individual access requirements, rather than necessarily granting broad access to a connected service.
