‘There was no limit to how much we could explore at school’

Every alumnus carries a different memory of what school gave them. For Dr. Tanmay Kaushik, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, it wasn’t a single defining moment but a steady accumulation of them. From tournaments won to hours spent in encyclopaedias, and teachers who demanded discipline while quietly building his confidence. 

Today, as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon working with Dentem Dental Clinic and consulting across multiple practices, Dr. Kaushik traces a clear line between the values his school instilled and the precision, composure, and commitment his profession now demands daily. We spoke with him about those years, and how they’ve stayed with him well into the operating room.

What are some of your fondest memories of your time at the school?

Most memories revolve around campus life and how it kept evolving through the years. But the ones I cherished most were on the playground — playing football, hockey, table tennis, volleyball, and more. Just being part of a tournament used to feel like an achievement in itself, and winning a few was simply the cherry on top. I was also always part of cultural activities, and participating regularly meant I could keep my hobbies alive alongside academics.

How would you describe the teachers who taught you?

My teachers were more than just educators. They played a genuinely important role in shaping who I am today. They were disciplined and demanding when it mattered, but also approachable and supportive. Beyond academics, they taught us values like responsibility, confidence, perseverance, and respect. These lessons have stayed with me long after leaving school.

How has their contribution played into your professional journey?

Their contribution has played a significant role in my professional journey. The discipline, perseverance, confidence, and sense of responsibility they instilled in me have helped me navigate challenges and remain committed to my goals. Even today, as a professional, I find myself drawing on those early lessons—especially the importance of working hard, staying grounded, and continuously learning.

Apart from academics, what important lessons did the school teach you?

Apart from academics, my school taught me the importance of discipline, teamwork, empathy, and staying grounded. It taught me to respect people, take responsibility for my actions, and face challenges with confidence. These lessons have stayed with me and continue to influence both my personal and professional life.

How did the school encourage you to explore your interests and talents?

There was really no limit to how much we could explore at school. I would often spend my free time reading encyclopaedias and then share the interesting things I’d learnt with my classmates. Participating in school sports tournaments and cultural activities also gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and overcome my stage fright. Looking back, the school gave me the freedom and encouragement to be curious, participate, and discover my interests beyond academics.

In what ways do you think the school shaped the person you are today?

I think my school shaped me in ways that go far beyond academics. It gave me the confidence to explore, the curiosity to keep learning, and the values of discipline, kindness, and staying grounded. Looking back, many of the qualities I value in myself today were nurtured during my school years, and I’m genuinely grateful to the school and my teachers for that.

Where are you working currently, and what is your job role?

Currently, I’m working as a consultant at Dentem Dental Clinic and as an on-call consultant for multiple other clinics as well. I work as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, treating surgical conditions involving the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. My work ranges from routine and complex tooth extractions and wisdom tooth surgeries to managing facial infections, cysts, tumours, and trauma cases. I’m also certified in Implantology by ICOI, USA, and provide implant-related care as part of my practice. What I enjoy most about my profession is being able to combine surgical skills with patient care, and make a meaningful difference to someone’s health, comfort, and confidence.
