Navratri is a vibrant, nine-day festival celebrated with immense devotion and energy across India, honouring Goddess Durga’s triumph over evil. It symbolises the victory of good over darkness, uniting communities through colourful dances, traditional music, and fasting rituals.

Shardiya Navratri will take place this year from October 3 to October 12. Devotees fast, carry out rituals and go to temples during this time to ask for blessings and protection. We’re all familiar with offering bhog to the Goddess, preparing special fasting foods, and performing daily puja. But did you know each day of Navratri is also associated with a unique colour, each holding a special significance?

Let’s explore the nine Navratri colours and discover the meaning and importance they bring to each festival day!

Day 1: Maa Shailputri – Yellow
Embrace the joy of Navratri by donning a vibrant yellow on this first day, Thursday! This sunny hue symbolises happiness and positivity, keeping your spirits bright. Maa Shailputri, depicted riding a bull and wielding a trident and a lotus, is revered for her power and devotion. She embodies a fresh start, reminding us of her past life as Goddess Sati, who reunited with Lord Shiva.

Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini – Green
Let the green colour take centrestage, representing growth and tranquillity. Goddess Brahmacharini, known for her bare feet and unwavering dedication, spent a thousand years in penance to win Lord Shiva’s love.

Day 3: Maa Chandraghanta – Grey
Embrace the calming grey essence that signifies balance and serenity. Maa Chandraghanta, the married form of Goddess Parvati, adorns a half-moon on her forehead, reflecting her strength and grace. This subtle colour helps you make a stylish impression while remaining grounded.

Day 4: Maa Kushmanda – Orange
Wear orange to channel warmth and vitality! Goddess Kushmanda, with her eight arms, is believed to energize the sun. This vibrant colour lifts your spirits, ensuring you stay lively and cheerful.

Day 5: Maa Skandamata – White
As we move ahead, drape yourself in white, a symbol of purity and innocence. Worship Maa Skandamata, who rides a lion and cradles Lord Murugan, to invite inner peace and divine blessings.

Day 6: Maa Katyayani – Red
On Tuesday, bring out your fiery red attire, representing passion and strength. Maa Katyayani, one of the fiercest forms of Goddess Durga, fought to vanquish the demon Mahishasura. This powerful colour energises your spirit and fuels your celebrations.

Day 7: Maa Kalaratri – Blue
Calls for royal blue, a colour of wealth and calm. Maa Kalaratri, the fierce incarnation of Goddess Parvati, embodies power and courage, making this vibrant hue a perfect choice for your Navratri attire.

On the eighth day, wear a pastel pink to symbolise love and harmony. Maa Mahagauri, celebrated for her beauty and grace, adds charm to your personality, making you more approachable during these festive days.
