Microsoft unveiled an upgraded version of its AI assistant, Copilot, aiming to integrate deeper into the Windows operating system by recalling everything users do on their PCs. This “Windows Recall” feature will allow the AI to function like a photographic memory, remembering user activities to better assist with future tasks. Microsoft assures users that they can filter what the AI tracks to protect their privacy.

This announcement comes as Microsoft faces increasing competition from other tech giants in the generative AI space. Google recently introduced an AI-enhanced search engine with summaries generated by AI and demonstrated its upcoming AI assistant, Astra, capable of interacting with a smartphone’s camera. Additionally, OpenAI, backed by significant Microsoft investment, showcased a new version of ChatGPT, featuring a voice assistant with lifelike characteristics. OpenAI also launched a desktop version of ChatGPT for Apple’s Mac computers.

Microsoft’s latest move appears to be a strategic response to anticipated developments from Apple, which hinted at significant generative AI investments for its June developers conference. The AI-enhanced Windows PCs, starting at $999, will be available from June 18 on premium models from manufacturers like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft’s Surface line.

The enhanced Copilot is part of Microsoft’s effort to embed AI features into products already widely used, positioning it as a lifelike personal assistant capable of composing documents and generating images. This push aligns with the broader trend in tech where companies are increasingly integrating sophisticated AI tools into everyday devices to enhance user experience and productivity.
