In the past couple of days, cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) have been reported across India. As the number of infections is slowly rising, it does increase the concern about a potential health risk.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold, such as sneezing, coughing, and mild fever. While it can affect individuals of all ages, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to severe complications like pneumonia and bronchitis.
Thus, with recent reports of HMPV cases in India, it’s essential to adopt preventive measures to curb its spread.
Here are a few preventive measures
Frequent Hand Washing: Regularly washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is crucial. This practice helps eliminate germs that may be present on your hands. In situations where soap and water are unavailable, using a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol serves as an effective alternative.

Avoid Touching Your Face: Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, especially with unwashed hands. These facial areas are common entry points for viruses, and touching them can facilitate the virus’s entry into your body.
Cover Your Mouth and Nose When Coughing or Sneezing: Always use a tissue or the inside of your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. This practice prevents the dispersion of respiratory droplets that may contain the virus. Dispose of used tissues immediately and wash your hands afterward.
Wear a Mask: In crowded or poorly ventilated areas, wearing a mask can reduce the risk of inhaling respiratory droplets that may carry the virus. This is particularly important during outbreaks or in high-risk settings.
Maintain Social Distance: Keep a safe distance from individuals exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness. Avoid close contact, such as handshakes or hugs, especially during outbreaks.
Clean and Disinfect Surfaces: Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices. This reduces the likelihood of virus transmission through surface contact.
Stay Home When Unwell: If you’re experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection, it’s advisable to stay home to prevent spreading the virus to others. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or persist.

Boost Your Immune System: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress. A robust immune system can help your body combat infections more effectively.
Stay Informed: Keep abreast of updates from health authorities regarding HMPV and adhere to any additional recommendations or guidelines they may provide. Staying informed enables you to take timely and appropriate actions to protect yourself and others.
Implementing these preventive measures diligently can significantly reduce the risk of contracting HMPV and help contain its spread within the community. While there is currently no vaccine for HMPV, adhering to these guidelines can safeguard your health and the well-being of those around you.
