Human values are essential for students today as they instill empathy, respect, and moral character. These values help students build strong interpersonal relationships, make ethical decisions, and contribute positively to society. In the future, possessing these values can lead to a more fulfilling and successful life by fostering teamwork, conflict resolution, and ethical leadership skills, making individuals not only academically competent but also socially responsible and emotionally intelligent.
Therefore, educational institutes like Apeejay are committed to the holistic development of students and ensure that they become ethical human beings with the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity. The students who personify and exhibit these values in their daily lives are awarded the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. Meet one such student – Ananya Ahlawat, a student at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri.
In a candid interview, the class X student defines what being human means.
What was your reaction when you got the award?
To be honest, I was shocked when I found out I was the one getting the prestigious award. When it all sunk in, I was extremely excited and thankful to my parents and teachers for this recognition.
Did you ever think you could get this award?
Initially, I had some doubts, especially when there were other participants from higher classes. But a friend of mine had received this award last year, I was a bit more confident that maybe I get this coveted award. When I learnt I was selected, I felt truly grateful.
Can you tell me about your hobbies?
I enjoy playing table tennis, writing poems, and reading biographies of famous personalities. While I have not written anything in some time, I will start writing again and share it with the Apeejay Newsroom.
What is it about Dr Stya Paul’s life that you find fascinating?
It is his determination and hard work. What is even more remarkable is that despite being a person with disabilities, he founded an institute like Apeejay Education – a school and university – where hundreds of thousands of students study and learn the true meaning of being human.
How do you define being human?
Being human, to me, means helping and respecting others, regardless of their status or possessions. It involves kindness and respect for all.
How have your teachers and parents influenced your life?
My teachers have been a significant influence on me, motivating me in various fields. All of my teachers have been exceptional. My parents have also played a crucial role; teaching me to be polite, respectful, and kind to others. But it was my maternal grandfather who had a huge impact.
Could you tell me about your maternal grandfather’s influence on you?
My maternal grandfather is an ex-ACP of the Delhi Police, and I’m inspired by him. Right from the start he has taught me the essence of human values. He congratulated me on winning the award and emphasized the importance of human values.
What are the challenges related to respecting elders and being polite in today’s world?
There are several. People don’t want to respect others let alone their peers. I have faced challenges, including bullying from classmates. However, I’ve learnt to ignore negativity and stay true to my values. This is something that I learnt from my maternal grandfather.
Do you engage in charity work or helping others?
I remember distributing refreshments and a cake made from eggs during a school event. I also donated old clothes for the needy through a programme. One act of kindness that everyone can do is to donate items that are no longer needed, such as old clothes, to help the less fortunate.
What are your plans?
I plan to enter the medical field initially and aspire to become an IAS officer later, to serve my country, inspired by my family’s strong ties to the military.
