A beacon of excellence in the world of Badminton, Manya, a resilient and talented student of class XII at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, has proven her mettle. Like a warrior on the court, she recently clinched a bronze medal at the most prestigious and monumental Badminton tournament in India – The 37th National Games of India, held at Goa from October 19 to 21, 2023. This remarkable achievement not only celebrates her prowess in the sport but also resonates with the patriotic fervour that unites the nation. Read edited excerpts from an inclusive interview with the star kid.
Can you tell us about your journey in Badminton leading up to the National Games?
Around six or seven years ago, I embarked on my Badminton journey. I was approximately 10 or 11 years old at that time. Initially, I started playing the sport to improve my fitness level, but as time went on, I developed a genuine interest in it. My motivation was significantly boosted when I won a District-level tournament, which fueled my determination to continue.
Can you describe how this accomplishment has influenced your personal goals and ambitions?
Winning at the National Games was a tremendous achievement for me. This event, often referred to as “Mini Olympics” due to the diverse range of sports held in one place, was a significant platform. While my ultimate ambition is to represent India and wear the National jersey, representing my state, Punjab, was a significant milestone for me. I was thrilled because I played a substantial role in our team’s victory.
How do you manage your time effectively to excel in both academics and sports?
Balancing academics and sports can be quite challenging, but my school has been supportive throughout. They have exempted me from certain academic responsibilities which has been of great help. However, I attend school when there are no major tournaments. With a limited time for studying, I’ve developed a strategy of studying at night with a cup of coffee.
What was your training regime and preparation for the Nationals?
Engaging in sports demands a rigorous training schedule. So, I wake up at 4 am for my first training session, which focuses on physical fitness and lasts from 5 to 7 am. This is followed by a playing session from 9 am to 12 pm, and then another one from 6 pm to 9 pm , totaling 7-8 hours of training per day.
To sustain my energy levels, I pay attention to my nutrition, ensuring an adequate intake of protein to meet the demands of my training. My breakfast typically includes eggs, milk, and other protein sources, while I maintain a healthy diet throughout the day with small but frequent meals. I also incorporate non-vegetarian food into my diet, and for dinner, I usually have dal.
Can you share the most memorable moment from the tournament?
One of the most cherished moments was when our team stood on the podium to receive medals. At the same time, the National Anthem played in the background.
How did you handle the pressure of such a significant tournament?
Nervousness does creep in at times but the unwavering support of my parents, teachers, and teammates is invaluable. When we sit together as a team, we strategise with confidence and motivate each other. This truly inspires me. The key is to focus on performing well, recognising that both victory and defeat are part of the journey.
What are your future goals and aspirations n?
My ultimate aspiration is to compete in the Olympics and bring home a medal for our country. I dream of standing on the International podium which will be a testament to my hard-earned victory.
How do your family members contribute to your focus and dedication in tournaments?
In most of my tournaments, my father accompanies me, providing invaluable motivation, even when I face tough opponents. He reassures me that I am well-prepared and capable of performing my best. Plus, my entire family is incredibly supportive, understanding the demands of my tournaments and encouraging me to concentrate on my game, with the assurance that I can catch up on my studies later.
With the ever-increasing competitiveness in sports, how do you plan to continue your progress and stay at the top of your game?
Undoubtedly, the competition is intensifying, with numerous talented players already representing our country. My strategy is to train harder, work diligently, and remain dedicated to my passion. While setbacks may occur in an event of a competition, it’s crucial not to be disheartened by failures and to persist in pursuing my goals.
