‘Why me?’: Poem by Divisha Dua, Apeejay School, Pitampura

It was the summer of 2016
She kept muttering, “Why me?”
Her eyes held great melancholy,
And heart bled with brilliant alacrity.

“Why me?”, her cry echoed in the room,
Full of family, friends yet with quietude.
A room full of a hundred questions,
Yet the key puzzle is up in the air.

Yes, Why her. Why did it have to be her?
Was it because she wore makeup?
Was it because of her red chic dress that she wore that eventful summer day?
Or was it because of her charm, her angelic innocence?

In the autumn, did she see the light,
And smiled again for the first time.
“It wasn’t my fault” she sighed with acceptance,
Of her fate, of the past and of the fact that yes, she’d been a victim of rape.

She took time to heal her soul,
After all, it’s never easy,
Rediscovering your hope, your happiness, yourself again.
But she did, like a fierce fighter, a tigress in disguise.

Akin, to the many fighters before her,
The tigress took to the floor and roared,
Fearlessly and with great tenacity,
She won! She got justice!

It was the summer of 2018,
She whispered, “This is me.”
Her hazel orbs held the luster of a thousand stars,
and her heart felt as light as a feather.
