On the memorable day of December 16, 2023, Apeejay School, Noida transformed into a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression and celebration during its ‘Annual Appreciation Day.’ A symphony of talent unfolded as the school hosted a captivating array of performances, ranging from orchestra and band melodies to theatrical displays, skits, music, songs, and enchanting dance performances. The event was not just a mere showcase; it was a seamless blend of diverse programmes where every element seamlessly transitioned into the next.

The stage came alive with the colorful presence of tiny tots, adorned in their lively attire, adding an adorable touch to the festivities. The magic extended beyond conventional boundaries, rare in its brilliance, as live vocals, recitations, and instrumental accompaniments brilliantly backed the symphony of dance and drama.

The esteemed chief guest for the evening was Ms Laxmi Singh, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP; Padma Shri Shashadhar Acharya, a renowned exponent of Chhau dance form, graced the occasion as the guest of honour. Dignitaries and distinguished members of the Apeejay Education, grandparents, parents, and alumni also attended the function. The programme was presided over by Mr Dinesh Rai, a Member of the Board of Governors.

The musical extravaganza commenced from the school gate itself with a band performance, a Science Park presentation, a symphonious orchestra, and energetic bhangra and Rajasthani dances.

The programme in the Auditorium commenced with a floral tribute to the revered Founder-Chairman Dr Stya Paul followed by the auspicious lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the Invocation Dance. Ms Ritu Kohli, principal, Apeejay School, Noida accorded a heartfelt welcome to the guests. She extended her heartfelt gratitude to parents and students for the support and commitment that have been the cornerstone of success throughout the academic year. She requested the parents to extend their strengths and goodness beyond their thresholds and help the needy.

Ms Singh showed the true mark of what being a Civil Servant is all about by expressing her sincere apologies for arriving late. “I want to clarify that this delay is not due to any negligence on my part. As a police officer, I always strive to be punctual for every commitment. Regrettably, time slipped away on this occasion, and I acknowledge the importance of valuing each moment,” she said and extended her gratitude to the school for inviting her to participate in this function.

“I am committed to fulfilling the responsibilities associated with this event. I acknowledge the presence of the esteemed members of the Apeejay Education, Madam Principal, dedicated staff members of the school, dear parents, and our chief guests. I appreciate the wonderful performance and human spirit showcased by the talented individuals. It is indeed an honour to stand before you and address this gathering,” Ms Singh shared.

In our busy lives, moments like these are rare opportunities to sit in the company of like-minded people, fostering a creative and innovative environment, she said. “I make it a point to visit educational institutes whenever possible to connect with such environments,” she said.

Reflecting on the achievements of the students at the Apeejay School Noida, she said that she was genuinely impressed by the academic excellence and the display of sportsmanship and talent. “The world has become more competitive, presenting challenges that our next generation may face, challenges that we, as parents, may not fully comprehend. Their world will be smaller, dominated by quick decision-making, and devoid of easy leisure. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what real education entails. Education is not confined to textbooks, playfields, or exams. Competitions and exams, while important, are just the beginning. The real tests lie in decision-making, facing obstacles, and meeting challenges after leaving institutions like this esteemed one,” Ms Singh said.

Quoting Albert Einstein, Ms Singh said: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think. This paradox underscores the essence of education as the ethos and pathos of the modern century, she said and added that while classroom education is necessary, it is insufficient in the current global context.

“The emphasis worldwide is shifting towards shaping individuals who contribute positively to humanity. Achieving technological supremacy without emotional intelligence makes the world a smaller and less humane place. Human beings, as the only race unable to survive in isolation, must recognise the importance of emotional intelligence alongside technological advancements. We are relatively new to this Earth, and our survival has depended on evolving beyond mere physical dominance. Let us embrace the responsibility of nurturing a balanced and compassionate society,” Ms Singh shared.

Student performance at the Annual Appreciation Day

Taking the stage Mr Acharya, thanked the principal and the management for extending the invite to him. He welcomed the parents and grandparents and took everyone present down memory lane when he was in school. A memory surfaced from my school days, a time when I navigated the educational landscape without a clear sense of what lay ahead. Uncertain about my future, I pursued studies without a defined direction. Education, for me, wasn’t just a general pursuit; it was rooted in timeless principles that guided my journey. I consider myself an artist — a realisation that dawned on me only later. In the past, I was oblivious to this identity, but now I embrace it,” he recalled.

How and why did this shift occur? “It all ties back to my academic journey. Despite earning a degree in law and working as a criminal lawyer for both central and state governments, I found myself unfulfilled. It became evident that my true calling lay in the arts — dance, theatre, and music, which I’ve always been passionate about. I heeded the inner voice that urged me to pursue what I was truly born for.

“My advice to all is simple: Listen to others, but ultimately, do what feels right for you. I, a village-raised individual who attended a government school, owe much of my success to my teachers, who played a pivotal role in shaping my present. Whether in studies, writing, painting, dance, music, or theatre, every field of study holds potential. However, success in these fields comes when pursued with genuine passion and dedication,” Mr Acharya said, reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the influence of my parents, who instilled in him the values that have shaped his life.

“Art, for me, became a medium to understand life and principles deeply. It goes beyond mere interest; it’s a way of life. I believe in being a good person first, and this purity is essential, especially in the realm of art. In the artistic domain, there are four archetypes: the good speaker, the good listener, the good eater, and the good saint. Striving to be the latter is crucial, as it involves cultivating one’s character. Art, being a realm of emotions, demands that artists create their unique identity.

“Understanding emotions allows us to navigate life more meaningfully. For instance, observing a person’s demeanor can reveal their thoughts and feelings. As an artist always on stage, I seldom get to see myself. However, today, stepping outside that role, I realised the impact of one’s attire on character, an insight gained from observing our Police Commissioner ma’am,” Mr Acharya shared.

Being a good human being goes hand in hand with patriotism, he opined. “True patriotism extends beyond singing songs; it involves performing one’s duties with a clear conscience. Our country, with its rich culture and heritage, deserves our love and protection. While embracing foreign cultures, we mustn’t lose sight of our own, as neglecting our identity could lead to our demise. In the country’s 75-year journey, I’ve realised the uniqueness of India. Let’s cherish and preserve our art, culture, and values. Love nature, animals, and birds—this is the key to a fulfilling life. As an artist, I find solace and purpose in this perspective, acknowledging that life itself is a gift from God,” Mr Acharya added.

Speaking at the function Mr Rai said that after listening to the impactful words shared attentively, it resonated deeply with the insights and perspectives expressed. I commend ma’am principal and her team for an excellent presentation. I find the school’s presentations distinctive and highly effective, showcasing the myriad academic and extracurricular activities. It’s heartening to see the school’s success, consistently ranking first in various surveys. This achievement is a testament to the exceptional efforts and sacrifices of the dedicated teaching staff. Parents play a pivotal role as well; they are the role models shaping young minds. I’d like to convey a few words to them. Parents, your support, guidance, and encouragement serve as the driving force behind your children’s success, nurturing qualities beyond academics, such as resilience, kindness, responsibility, and inclusivity,” Mr Rai said.

Congratulating the students who have excelled, he said: “Students, you are the architects of your destiny; embrace challenges as opportunities, dream big, work diligently, and achieve your aspirations. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. Values are integral to success; instill them, and don’t merely enforce ideas. Parents, understand your children, nurture their unique qualities, and encourage them. Success might not come immediately; some are late bloomers.

“Discipline is vital, as seen when we encounter a red light. Waiting for the right time ensures smoother progress. If we cultivate more discipline in India, progress is inevitable. Another aspect is helping others; it’s our moral duty. Even in small ways, extend assistance to the less fortunate. During the pandemic, children adapted to online classes, but it’s crucial to encourage outdoor activities,” Mr Rai shared.

This school stands out for its sports activities; kudos to the teachers and instructors, he said. “Dr Satya Paul’s vision of “soaring high” echoes, emphasising the importance of students becoming ideal citizens for our country’s progress. A special thanks to Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Education, and Chancellor Apeejay Stya University and the entire management for their tireless efforts in enhancing the school,” Mr Rai added.

The principal then presented the Annual School Report along with members of the Prefectorial Board, chronicling the school’s achievements at the international and national levels. This was followed by the Prize Distribution Ceremony wherein the chief guest and the guests of honour felicitated the meritorious students for excellence in academics and co-curricular arenas for the session 2023-24.

Annual Appreciaiton Day performance

The event recognised the outstanding achievements of students in both scholastic and co-scholastic areas as well as showcased the immense wealth of talent of the students. Contributions of Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia,  Mr Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University; Mr Aditya Berlia, Co-Promoter Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University and Dr Neha Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya & Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University were shared with the audience.

The special highlight of the evening was a captivating musical play — Ollie With A Twist— a modern take on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, showcasing the talent of 450 students from nursery to class XII.

The bilingual play was inspired by the sentiment of compassion, social commitment, and equal education opportunities for all the sacred principle of the guiding light by Founder-Chairman Dr Stya Paul. The idea was wrapped around the story of Oliver Twist, surprisingly narrated through the characters of Vikram and Betal. The occult world merged with stark reality and forcefully urged people to adopt, foster, and reach out to underprivileged children for their food, shelter, and education.

After a breathtaking grand finale, the programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks.
