Dressing for success is considered important in professional and certain social settings. The way you present yourself through your attire can significantly influence the initial impression you make on others and can impact how they perceive your professionalism, competence, and credibility.

When you dress well, you tend to feel more confident and self-assured. This confidence can translate into improved performance, effective communication, and better interactions with others. Dressing professionally can boost your own morale and help you project a strong, capable image.

So what are the essential wardrobe staples for a professional setting? According to Nidhi Suhag, Assistant Professor, School of Design and Visual Design-Apeejay Stya University, the perfect work wardrobe is all about choosing items that fit your body type and the environment you’re working in.

By creating work outfits around the below given seven key workwear staples (business casual), one can build a capsule wardrobe that will provide endless looks, while saving the money,

1. A pencil skirt (more formal) or midi skirt (more casual).

2. A blazer or jacket.

3. A basic, neutral coloured dress.

4. Tailored pants.

5. Dressy shoes that are comfortable for walking in.

6. Solid-colour dress shirts.

7.  Sheath dresses.

For Suhag, the perfect formal attire for women are: Black blazer, sheath dress, black pumps, black quilted bag, and gold hoops or black blazer, white blouse, pearl earrings, plaid skirt, and black booties.

You can wear a bow tie blouse, black trousers, diamond studs, and black loafers. Puff sleeve blouse with black straight leg pants, black tote and black booties is a great formal wear. If you want to add a bit of colour and move from black: Tie blouse, grey pencil skirt, black tote, gold hoops, and black pumps are a perfect office wear,” Suhag opined and added that blue, black, grey, brown, and white are considered as formal colours.

For that formal casual look

“For casual office attire, it’s important to balance comfort with style and professionalism. For men, dark-wash jeans, khakis, or men’s chinos paired with a collared shirt or a polo shirt can be appropriate. Avoid wearing T-shirts with logos or graphics. Pairing a blazer with women’s T-shirts and jeans is a great way to create a more dressed-up casual look. Opt for skinny or straight-leg jeans in a dark wash, as they will provide a polished look. Complete the outfit with a pair of trendy sneakers or loafers, and accessorize with understated jewelry and a simple purse,” Suhag advised.

Remember, dressing professionally and polished is essential for making a good impression in any work environment. “The key is to find a balance between your personal style and the dress code requirements of your job. You can do this by playing with colour, focus on fit, accessorize thoughtfully, experiment with patterns, showcase signature pieces, experiment with textures and hairstyles, and show confidence through footwear,” Suhag said.

Mistakes to avoid

She is also quick to point out gaffes to avoid. “Wearing too many colours is a no-no. You should not wear clothes that don’t fit properly. Just because a style is trending doesn’t mean you have to adopt it – always look for comfort first. Don’t wear clothes without checking if they all work together. Don’t wear too many distracting elements, and finally, go for comfort and not the brand,” Suhag opined.

The mantra for dressing for success does not always mean buying something new or wearing something with a designer label. Some of the most successful outfits you have in your wardrobe are made up of old favourites which makes you look and feel good.

“Think about garments that are relatively tailored but have surprise elements in the look. For example, some embellishment is added to your blouse or jacket in the form of a pin, necklace, dressy buttons or handbag may be appropriate,” Suhag said and shared some more examples.

Choose a colour palette that suits your skin tone and hair color, creating a halo effect of youthfulness and leadership. Gray, black and nude colours are often more accepted in a formal business environment.

Seek out collections or brands that offer a professional look with simple silhouettes that reflect a modern personal style. A different colour or patterned blouse, a statement shoe or a striking accessory. The combination of colour, pattern and straight lines creates a commanding yet approachable tone.

“For example, simple silhouettes are best for business attire; these include A-line skirts, crisp lines and nothing overly extravagant with a multitude of pleats or floor-length dresses. Patterns with geometric shapes are generally considered the most appropriate for professional attire,” She said.

Find the most flattering silhouette. Consider your body type in order to find the best silhouette for you. For example, if you have an oval-shaped body, go for pieces with shoulder pads that strengthen your shoulder line and draw attention to your neckline with a contrast collar to de-emphasise the waist. The professional environment often comes with certain expectations and dress codes.

“However, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your personal style and creativity. You can still showcase your individuality while maintaining a polished and professional look,” Suhag said in conclusion.
