In a fast-paced world, students face numerous challenges in keeping up with vast amounts of information and mastering multiple things simultaneously. But don’t worry!
Microlearning is a powerful tool to help you succeed in both scholastic and co-scholastic achievements. By breaking down complex topics into bite-sized, manageable chunks, micro-learning offers an effective and efficient approach. To explain it simply, it is a strategy that focuses on delivering small, targeted bursts of information to learners.
According to the celebrated theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein, ‘Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think’. And, this quote by him encapsulates the essence of microlearning. Rather than focusing solely on acquiring facts, this method is about the development of critical thinking skills.
In the following article, we will delve into the importance of microlearning and understand practical tips for implementing it. Read on.
Why follow microlearning?
Enhanced Retention: Research has shown that learners are more likely to retain information when it is presented in small, manageable increments. By regularly engaging in microlearning, students can reinforce their understanding and memory of important concepts.
Flexibility and Time Management: Microlearning allows students to learn at their own pace and schedule, fitting it seamlessly into their busy lives. It enables them to allocate short, dedicated periods of time for learning, maximising productivity and minimising distractions.
Targeted Learning: Students have to focus on specific areas of weakness or interest. By honing in on particular topics, they can address gaps in their knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of challenging subjects.
Engagement and Motivation: Bite-sized learning modules promote active learning and keep students engaged. Interactive quizzes, videos, and gamification elements can make the learning process enjoyable and stimulating, fostering motivation and curiosity.
How to incorporate the technique in daily life?
Set Clear Goals: Identify specific learning objectives or areas that require improvement. Break them down into smaller, achievable goals to make progress more manageable.
Create a Schedule: Designate regular time slots for micro-learning. Allocate short periods throughout the day, such as during breaks or commuting, to ensure consistent engagement.
Utilise Digital Resources: Take advantage of online platforms, educational apps, and interactive learning tools that offer microlearning content. These resources often provide concise modules, quizzes, and progress tracking features.
According to Shiv Jindal, a class 10 student from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar, “I prepare for inter-school and National-level competitions through online resources. I was part of a National-level Science quiz last December for which I searched up topmost and credible websites to add to my knowledge. One can easily learn Science and General Awareness through it.”
Take Notes: Summarise key points and concepts in your own words. Writing down information aids comprehension and helps with retention. Review your notes regularly to reinforce your understanding.
To exemplify the same, Bhavleen Kaur, a class 9 student at Apeejay School, Model Town “I take notes especially for subjects like Science and Social Science and keep them organised and crisp.” She is the topper of her class.
Collaborate and Share: Engage in group discussions, study circles, or online forums where you can exchange ideas and insights with peers. Explaining concepts to others can solidify your understanding and provide fresh perspectives.
The trend of microlearning has gained significant traction in recent years. As learners seek effective and time-efficient ways to education, microlearning is an appealing solution. Further, it aligns with the principles of personalised learning and lifelong learning which emphasise continuous improvement and individualised educational pathways.
