‘This school excels in academics and co-curricular activities’

A mother of two Apeejay students believes a strong teacher-student bond enhances learning

Choosing the right school in India can be a daunting task due to several factors that affect the decision-making process. This is because our country is vast and diverse with numerous educational boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), state boards, the International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Each board has its own curriculum and assessment system, making it challenging for parents to select the most suitable one for their child.

However, for some parents like Anita Singh and her husband Tejvinder Kumar, choosing the school for their children — Sashmith Kumar (class VII) and Tanushka (Class I) at Apeejay School, Model Town – was a cakewalk. This is because Anita is an alumna of Apeejay Institute of Management and Engineering Technical Campus, Jalandhar. (AIMETC)

In a candid interview, the mother of two talks about how good the teachers are at this school.

Why did you choose Apeejay for your children?

I did my MBA from AIMETC. I was well aware of the kind of education that this institute imparts. I had physically visited several schools when it was time for Sashmith to start his schooling. I chose Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld because it was newly opened and everything was so nice and bright. So I thought it was the best option for my son. Since I was happy with the education for my son, my daughter followed suit.

How is the staff at Apeejay?

They are extremely cordial and supportive. If I need anything, they are always there to help a parent. It is very important that the administrative staff is good. It makes it easier to make yourself heard. Also, the principal is wonderful. He is doing extraordinary work to uplift the school. More activities like Sports Guru has been introduced. Extra-curricular activities have started at Model Town. The teachers are cooperative. What more can a parent ask for?

Did you look at Apeejay differently as a parent?

Yes, of course. As a parent, you have to look at so many things. How are the teachers? What is the infrastructure? What is the academic trajectory? You also look at the safety aspect as well. And the good part is that Apeejay excels at each one of them.

How is the learning of your children?

My son is doing brilliantly. He has been a topper in his class all through. His drawings and paintings are good. A lot of his artwork has been published on the Apeejay Newsroom website. The teachers have already started doing revisions in anticipation of the upcoming exams. Since the school has introduced extracurricular activities, I hope to see my son as part of those as well.

My daughter is happily going to school. I was a bit apprehensive she moved from Rhythms Kinderworld to the Model Town branch, a much bigger school. But she has adjusted well.

The role of teachers in your children’s development.

My daughter’s teacher Tanushka Shikha ma’am is excellent. I have never seen a teacher so far. She takes my calls even after school hours and addresses all my queries. So much so that I don’t have to go to the principal.

For my son, Nidhi ma’am was the class teacher in class VI and now there is Sulekha ma’am; both are excellent. Last year, we were away from school for 15 days. Nidhi ma’am was very supportive and shared all the work that was done in the class. Also, my son is very shy and mostly keeps to himself. Most kids tease him. So, the teachers have told him to come to them if it becomes too tough for him to handle.

How important is it for a student to have a bond with the teacher?

I would say that it is extremely necessary. If there is no bond, it will make it difficult for the child to learn from the teacher. What I find nice about Apeejay is that since most of the staff are parents themselves, they see the kids are children rather than mere students.
