Graceful, expressive, and rhythmically powerful, this Kathak dancer embodies the soul of storytelling through movement. Meet Navya Bhatt, at present, studying in Class VIII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview, she shares how she has mastered the art of captivating audiences with intricate footwork, graceful spins, emotive gestures, and an unspoken narrative told through every glance and step.
Tell us about your recent Kathak achievement.
I had the opportunity to represent my school at the national-level Inter-school competition organised by the Heritage Foundation of Art and Culture. After performing a classical Kathak piece, I achieved the honour of securing the third position among the participants.
How did the journey start?

I started learning this art form when I was four years old. At first, it was just for fun, but slowly I began to love the dance. I enjoyed the expressions, the footwork, and wearing the traditional costume. As I kept learning, I also got chances to perform on stage and take part in competitions. Kathak has now become a very special part of my life.
What pulled your interest in this dance form?
When I started performing Kathak, it was a little tough for me. But slowly, I began to enjoy it. I really liked doing the chakkars, wearing ghungroos, and the beautiful costume. Step by step, I started loving the dance more and more.
Share your training regime?
I practice Kathak daily for an hour. My guruji, from the Jaipur Gharana, has taught me many taals and compositions, including Kathak-based Bollywood songs. During my daily practice, I try to cover and rehearse as much as I can, which includes footwork and chakkars.
How is the school supporting your journey?
My school supported me a lot in this journey. It was my teacher who told me about the competition and encouraged me to take part. I am very grateful to my dance teachers for always giving me opportunities to perform in school events and helping me grow in dance.
Who is your inspiration and favourite dancer?
My inspiration behind learning Kathak is my guruji. He teaches with a lot of passion and always motivates me to improve. My favourite dancer is Pandit Birju Maharajji because of his graceful expressions and storytelling. I was happy and proud when I recently received appreciation from his daughter; it really encouraged me to keep working hard in Kathak.
