The monsoon season brings refreshing showers, vibrant greenery, and a cool respite from the scorching heat. But it often leaves each of us wondering what to wear when it’s pouring outside. Fret not! While rain may seem like a hindrance to your fashion choices, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. With the right clothing and accessories, you can stay fashionable and rain-ready during this wet yet beautiful season.

So, let’s explore what to wear and what to not wear in monsoon:

1. Embrace waterproof fabrics: When it comes to monsoon fashion, choosing the right fabrics is essential. Opt for waterproof or water-resistant materials like nylon, polyester, or treated cotton. These fabrics repel water and dry quickly, keeping you comfortable even during heavy downpours. Invest in a stylish raincoat or a waterproof jacket that complements your personal style.

According to a renowned fashion designer Saurabh Gupta, who is an alumnus of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, “Ripstop fabric is my go-to choice for the monsoon season. It is ideal for outdoor use due to its durability and waterproof features. Being lightweight, it is easy to carry and comfortable to wear. This tear-resistant material is also breathable, allowing air to circulate around the body while keeping the wearer dry in wet weather conditions. The waterproof nature of ripstop fabric makes it perfect for outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, providing protection from the elements like rain and snow. Additionally, it is windproof, which helps to keep you warm during windy days.”

2. Light and layered clothing: Monsoon weather can be unpredictable, with sudden showers followed by humidity. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that keep you cool and comfortable. Layering is also a smart choice as it allows you to adjust your clothing according to the changing weather. Pair a light cardigan or a denim jacket with a colourful top or a dress to create versatile looks.

3. Stylish footwear: Choosing the right footwear is crucial during the monsoon season. Say goodbye to suede and leather shoes that can get ruined by rainwater. Instead, opt for waterproof or water-resistant footwear like rubber or PVC rain boots. They not only protect your feet from puddles but also add a trendy touch to your outfit. For a more casual look, you can go for colourful flip-flops or jelly sandals.

4. Playful prints and colours: Brighten up gloomy rainy days with vibrant prints and colours. Choose cheerful patterns like floral, polka dots, or geometric designs that add a pop of colour to your ensemble. Not only will it lift your mood, but it will also make a fashion statement amidst the rain.

As per Arjita, a B. Design student specialising in Fashion at ASU, “Playful prints and colours have the power to infuse joy, creativity, and vibrancy into any wardrobe. They break away from the monotony of solid shades, allowing individuals to express their unique personality and style. From whimsical polka dots and bold stripes to quirky animal prints and abstract patterns, playful prints add an element of fun and visual interest to garments. Similarly, a vibrant colour palette consisting of bright yellows, electric blues, fiery reds, and cheerful oranges can instantly uplift moods and create a lively fashion statement. Whether incorporated into dresses, tops, accessories, or even shoes, playful prints and colours inject a sense of playfulness and individuality, turning everyday outfits into eye-catching ensembles that celebrate the joy of self-expression.”

  1. Accessories to complete the look: Accessorising is an excellent way to elevate your monsoon fashion game. Here are a few ideas:
    • Umbrellas: Make a statement with a stylish umbrella that compliments your outfit. Choose one with a fun print or a unique design to stand out from the crowd.
    • Waterproof bags: Invest in a chic waterproof bag or backpack to keep your belongings safe from rainwater. Look for options made from waterproof materials like PVC or coated canvas.
    • Scarves and hats: Scarves made from lightweight fabrics like chiffon or cotton can add a touch of elegance to your outfit while protecting your neck from unexpected drizzles. A wide-brimmed hat not only shields you from the rain but also adds a stylish flair to your look.
    • Waterproof watches and jewellery: Opt for waterproof or water-resistant watches and jewellery to avoid damage from rainwater. Choose pieces that are both practical and stylish to complete your monsoon ensemble.

With these fashion tips and ready to carry essentials, you can embrace the monsoon season with style and confidence. Remember to choose the right fabric for styling during the monsoon weather. Don’t forget to accessorise with stylish umbrellas, waterproof bags, and weather-appropriate footwear. All in all, stay comfortable, stay fashionable, and enjoy the beauty of the monsoon while showcasing your unique style.
