Students at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) in Jalandhar have recognised the importance of establishing strong relationships with their respected teachers. Dr Manisha Sharma, a professor in the PG Department of Commerce, ACFA, recently held a discussion with students on the topic of “Strong Teacher-Student Relationships.” She highlighted the growing concern regarding the diminishing respect for teachers among students today.

She attributed this change in behaviour to the influence of social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. Moreover, the inability of parents to dedicate sufficient time to their children and the anxiety students experience about their future have significantly impacted their nature.

Dr Sharma emphasised that the responsibility for this shift in attitude does not solely lie with the students but also with their parents. Teachers should not only focus on completing the syllabus but also establish a personal connection with each student. This would enable teachers to understand the student’s family background and provide appropriate guidance. Classroom teaching alone is insufficient for the overall development of students; they need occasional outings and opportunities for their voices to be heard.

ACFA principal Dr Neerja Dhingra shared her thoughts on this subject, emphasising the significant responsibility teachers have in fostering friendly relationships with students. By building such relationships, students feel comfortable sharing their inner conflicts and seeking guidance during challenging times. Dr Dhingra pointed out that the teacher-student relationship in the guru-shishya tradition represents the ideal model for such connections. She believes that if teachers contribute to the development of students’ personalities by understanding all their qualities and flaws, students will undoubtedly be prepared for successful lives and make significant contributions to the nation-building process.

At ACFA, fostering positive relationships with students is highly valued, and the professors go above and beyond to guide, support, and encourage students. They take the initiative to understand each student’s unique strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations, providing personalised mentorship. With a focus on practical experience, professors encourage students to take on internships, workshops, and industry projects, empowering them to face challenges, push their boundaries, and grow as professionals. This commitment to fostering strong relationships and providing comprehensive support is a testament to the college’s dedication to student success.
