Donating food to the needy people with the credo that nobody should stay hungry, must become one of the resolutions for an individual. With this belief, the Rotaract Club of Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurgaon, in collaboration with Sangharsh, Soul NGO and Club of Delhi Janak recently organised a food donation camp ‘Parkalyan’. The donation drive was sponsored by JMD pools.

During the drive, students donated money to buy food for hungry people. From the collected donations, fruits, biscuits and more than 200 plates of food were distributed to the underprivileged people at the NGO.

Dr Vijay Kumar, Associate Professor of the School of Education, was the faculty coordinator of this food donation camp. Vanshita Singh, Piyush Dagar and Apurva Gupta were student coordinators of the camp.

While expressing her views about this initiative , Vanshita Singh, Director of Community Service said, “Donating to the needy is a great way to improve the conditions in our neighborhood or community. Donating food to needy people or organisations helps counter poverty, hunger, and at the same time, it can improve harmony, friendliness, and trust among residents.”

Piyush Dagar, the Event Co-head said, “Before the food donation drive we had a fun time with the children at the NGO. They showcased their amazing dancing skills and we were all stunned by the amount of talent each one of them possessed. Thereafter, we donated food plates to 200+ people and smiles on their faces were priceless and made our day so fulfilling and special.”

The main focus of the drive was to inculcate social skills amongst the students so that they could be better adjusted to society after completing their formal education and could understand their duties and responsibilities as a human being towards society, nation and the world at large.

It is worth mentioning that community service is a very important aspect of this effective learning process and holds a key position in ASU’s teaching-learning pedagogy. As per the ordinance of ASU, every student is required to complete 20 to 50 hours of Community Work to get a degree in any programme.

To acknowledge the efforts, students who donated to the cause were given participation certificates and 3 community hours were credited to their final report.
