Lights of Awareness: Delhi school champions a sustainable Diwali

Ecological festivities meet informed creativity

Diwali, the festival of lights, can transcend its traditional revelry to become a powerful catalyst for social impact and community well-being. Beyond the luminous glow of diyas and the vibrant burst of fireworks, Diwali serves as a profound opportunity to channel the spirit of giving and compassion towards community-based initiatives. This auspicious occasion provides a platform for individuals and organisations to come together, leveraging the collective enthusiasm to make a positive difference.

Amidst the radiant glow of the featival, to symbolise inherent goodness and altruistic actions, the Interact Club of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park in Delhi, took a bold step to rekindle the true spirit of the celebration. Recognising the occasion’s potential to dispel not only physical darkness but also the shadows of poverty and ignorance, the club initiated a ‘Green Diwali’ campaign to address the growing environmental concerns.

In a bid to redirect the focus towards a more environmentally conscious celebration, students from classes VI to VIII participated by creating impactful posters. These artistic expressions delved into pertinent themes such as the hazards of smoke and pollution, the adverse impact on both humans and animals, and the alignment with United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

The campaign aimed to inspire a collective commitment to celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly manner. By harnessing the creativity and thoughtfulness of the students, the Interact Club pledged to initiate a positive change in the community, encouraging everyone to embrace a more sustainable and conscientious approach to Diwali festivities. Through this event, the young minds exemplified the power of education and awareness in fostering responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship.

The Interact Club orchestrated a heartwarming event titled “Project Illumine Lives” at Srishti Foundation, Okhla in November, 2023 as well. This philanthropic initiative was strategically aligned with SDG 4, focusing on Quality Education. The primary aim was to sow the seeds of knowledge among underprivileged children, effectively bridging the gap between ignorance and understanding.

The event unfolded with a spectrum of engaging activities facilitated by the Interactors. From captivating storytelling sessions to interactive quizzes, the young minds were immersed in a holistic learning experience. Serving as beacons of change, the Interactors passionately distributed books and essential stationery items, championing the cause of education for all. The joy radiating from the children’s smiles and the palpable ripples of happiness among the Interactors attested to the resounding success of the project.

These initiatives not only illuminated the festive spirit of Diwali but also lit the path to a brighter future through the gift of education. The events stood as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and collective effort in making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
