English is a globally recognised language and is widely used in various professional and academic contexts. Having a good command of English is crucial for career advancement and higher education opportunities. Knowing your English teacher allows you to receive personalised guidance, feedback, and instruction, which can significantly enhance your language skills.

English teachers can provide insights into the cultural references, idioms, and expressions that are commonly used in English-speaking countries. A good teacher can tailor their teaching methods and materials to suit a student’s learning style, helping him/her to progress more efficiently.

Meet Anju Varghese, an English teacher at Apeejay School, Kharghar. “I have completed my schooling from the Central Board of Secondary Education. Excerpts from the interview.

How did you get interested in teaching?

I have been teaching for the last 17 years. I have taught classes IX to XII. What got me interested in this profession was a teacher of mine. In my school life, I have come across some of the best teachers, one of them was, Cherian ma’am. She understood and recognised my fondness for literature. It was because of her that I realised that only a passionate teacher can create a love for language and literature.

How do you manage work-life balance?

To manage work-life balance, you have to prioritise your work. Make a list based on what is the most important task to perform and follow it to a T. That has been my mantra. The best part is that I have the full support of my family.

Why is there so much stress on experiential learning today?

Our present education system is moving away from rote learning, students forget information and concepts that they hear during their lectures, instead, they learn a lesson by engaging in role-play, participating in group discussions, and applying the concept in their day-to-day activities.

What do you think are the most important skills that students need to develop to succeed in the 21st century?

The most important 21st-century skill is communication and collaboration. It is through this ability we can express our thoughts and emotions; help to develop interest and fun in teaching and learning; and broaden our perspective regarding our social, cultural, and environmental boundaries.

How do you collaborate with other teachers to support student learning?

To support student learning, we have departmental meetings, attend workshops, and share our experiences with other teachers.

How do you encourage creativity and innovation in your students?

To encourage creativity and innovation in students we involve them in various activities, constantly motivate them and appreciate them for their out-of-the-box thinking skills.

How and why did you choose Apeejay?

Both my children are students of Apeejay School. I was very impressed with the way learning was imparted here. So, when I decided to start my professional journey as a teacher, I wanted to work at this esteemed institute. And now I am living my wish.
