A recent report highlights that the global artificial intelligence in sports market was valued at $1.4 billion in 2020. In fact, this number is projected to reach $19.2 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 30.3% from 2021 to 2030. So undoubtedly, artificial intelligence is powering the sports industry. From covering post-game analysis, in-game activity, to offering unique fan experiences, the sports industry is leveraging the benefits of AI to transform the overall experience of athletes or players, coaches and fans. AI has emerged as a key technology in providing critical cues to improve performance exponentially.
So, let’s delve deeper to understand how AI is used in 5 different sports:
Football – Precision at every step

In the world of football, precision and data-driven insights have become integral to the game. Artificial intelligence has stepped onto the pitch, revolutionising player performance. One remarkable application is the use of AI chips embedded in players’ boots. These chips meticulously map players’ movements, from the distance covered to their acceleration and deceleration. They track player breathing patterns and heart rate, enabling coaches and physiologists to fine-tune training regimens, minimise injury risks, and optimise overall performance. With AI, footballers are not just athletes; they are data-driven machines.
Cricket – Mastering the art of bowling and batting

Cricket, a sport steeped in tradition, has embraced AI to refine its techniques. Bowling machines equipped with AI capabilities are changing the way fast bowlers train. These machines can replicate the deliveries of different bowlers, from spin to pace, with pinpoint accuracy. Batsmen, too, benefit from AI-driven analysis, which dissects their strengths and weaknesses against various types of deliveries. Through AI, cricketers can simulate match scenarios, hone their skills, and strategise with unparalleled precision.
Tennis – The AI coach on the virtual court
In tennis, AI serves as an invaluable coach on the court. Players can employ AI-based training tools that track their shots and provide real-time feedback on accuracy, spin, and power. These systems analyse opponents’ playing styles and suggest tactical adjustments mid-match. AI is also used in officiating, helping in line-calling with remarkable precision. The result is a game where every stroke and decision is augmented by the power of artificial intelligence, making tennis more competitive and engaging than ever before.
Basketball – Shooting for perfection
Basketball enthusiasts are witnessing a transformation in shooting accuracy, thanks to AI. Smart basketballs equipped with sensors and AI algorithms can analyse shooting form, arc, and spin. They provide instant feedback to players, helping them refine their shots. AI is also employed in player performance analysis, extracting insights from vast amounts of game footage to enhance strategic planning and optimise team dynamics. In basketball, AI is the sixth player, offering a winning edge to those who harness its capabilities.
Olympics – Precision and records
Across the spectrum of Olympics, AI is playing a pivotal role in precision and record-breaking. From archery to rowing, AI-assisted training aids athletes in perfecting their techniques. Biometric sensors monitor vital signs, ensuring peak performance while minimising injury risks.

In sports like swimming and track and field, AI helps analyse athletes’ strides and strokes, enabling them to shave off precious milliseconds. The result is a fusion of human skill and AI-driven precision that raises the bar in pursuit of sporting excellence.
Final words
The integration of artificial intelligence into sports is a testament to the ever-evolving relationship between technology and athleticism. From football to cricket, tennis to basketball, and the Olympic arena, AI is transforming how athletes train, compete, and achieve remarkable feats.
As we witness this AI revolution in sports, it becomes clear that the synergy between human capability and technological innovation knows no bounds. AI isn’t replacing athletes; it’s enhancing their potential, pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and reshaping the future of sports.
