On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu stated that Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India are undergoing a transition to prioritise start-ups, applied research, and commercially valuable innovation while upholding the tradition of fundamental research.

These remarks were made during the concluding day of the ‘Visitor’s Conference 2023,’ which saw the participation of 150 heads of HEIs, including prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs), National Institute of Technologies (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs), and Central Universities, among others.

President Murmu further expressed confidence in the potential of HEIs in India to become hubs of research and innovation. She urged the heads of institutions to lead the way in promoting innovation that can be utilised for industrial and commercial purposes.

She also highlighted that developed countries are renowned for their higher educational institutions, attracting students from around the world. In light of this, she noted that India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 provides a roadmap for Indian HEIs to transform into global education centres.
