IIT Mandi Director says AI cannot replace core engineering disciplines 

In the midst of ongoing discussions about the transformation of education due to the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Laxmidhar Behera, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, said that the current engineering college curriculum does not need a major overhaul in response to AI. 

Behera in conversation with PTI mentioned that AI has not yet reached a stage where it can effectively educate students on scientific concepts and possibilities. 

He highlighted the limitations of our understanding of cognitive processes, emphasising that AI cannot replace the core disciplines of engineering. Behera acknowledged the potential for AI to enhance certain aspects but downplayed the notion of AI replacing fundamental engineering education, considering it more of a temporary hype.
