While Jalandhar has several good schools, this parent decided to go for Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, since it is near to where the family lives. There were a few other things that Triveni Khanna and her husband Manish kept in mind while choosing the school.

“Apeejay is in the heart of the city. It is one of the oldest schools and over the years, it has become a brand and acquired a reputation as one of the best schools in the city. The pre-primary section is absolutely amazing. My young son, Soham, who is in LKG, loves every bit of his time at the school. My elder son, Devashya, is in class IV. So, it made sense that I put my younger one in the same school as well,” Khanna said.

Excerpts from the interview.

How is the school? Has it lived up to your expectations?

I would say that this school has the best pre-primary section. I love everything that they have here – be it the excellent teachers or the staff. My son is in the LKG and will be going to UKG; he has been doing well in the class and grasping everything that is being taught beautifully.

What is the best part about this school?

I would say the fact that all the teachers of my younger son know me by face. I have that comfort level with them. I get regular feedback about Soham’s progress. If I have a query, it gets addressed promptly.

As parents, you want the best for your children even if they are away from home. We want the school to be like a second home for your children. The teachers at this school are good and go out of their way to ease things for the students

How is the teacher-parent interaction?

It is good but that doesn’t mean it can’t get better. There is always scope for improvement. And as parents, you want the best for your children even if they are away from home. We want the school to be like a second home for your children. Most of the teachers at school are good and go out of their way to ease things for the students.

Why was proximity to the school from home so important?

There would have been a time when this would not have played a role but times have changed. I drop and pick my kids; a school that is near makes it easier – reduces driving time. Also, for me, to be a few minutes away, gives me a sense of peace that if need be I can be at the school in under five minutes.

Tell us about Soham’s learning progress?

I would say it is satisfactory. He is doing well in the class. He also participates in the activities that the school organises. The same is true for the elder son. I would say that both my children are intelligent but you always want the best for your child.

How do you teach your child to be communicative?

If you suddenly expect that your child will start communicating with you that will not happen overnight. It is a habit and an exercise that the parents have to start from the very beginning. As a parent, you have to ask the right questions. Start small; ask them about their day and friends. Once the child is in the habit of speaking with you, he/she will always be open and share important things.
