Arijit RoyGurupurab, also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti, is a sacred celebration that reverberates with joy and devotion in the Sikh community. It marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, and is a time for reflection, prayer, and the vibrant display of Sikh values. In this article, we delve into the backdrop of Gurupurab, exploring the profound teachings and major life works of Guru Nanak Dev that continue to guide millions on a path of enlightenment.
The radiant birth of Guru Nanak
Gurupurab is a celebration of light, both literal and metaphorical. Guru Nanak Dev, born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi (now in Pakistan), brought a radiant light into the world. His birth anniversary, celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Kartik, according to the Sikh calendar, is a time of profound significance for Sikhs and Hindus globally. Gurupurab is not merely a commemoration; it is an embodiment of the teachings that Guru Nanak bestowed upon humanity.
Guru Nanak’s teachings: A beacon of wisdom
Central to Guru Nanak’s teachings is the concept of Ik Onkar, emphasising the oneness of God. He propagated the idea that all humans are equal, irrespective of their caste, creed, or gender. In a society marred by discrimination, Guru Nanak’s message of equality was revolutionary. His teachings encouraged a life of humility, compassion, and service to humanity, fostering a sense of unity among diverse communities.
The three pillars of Guru Nanak’s wisdom
Naam Japna (Meditation on God’s Name): Guru Nanak stressed the importance of continuous remembrance of God through meditation. Naam Japna serves as a means to connect with the divine and cultivate inner peace.
Kirat Karni (Earning an Honest Living): Guru Nanak advocated for the dignity of labor and the importance of earning a livelihood through honest means. He believed in the sanctity of hard work and denounced exploitation or dishonesty in one’s profession.
Vand Chakna (Sharing with Others): The concept of Vand Chakna underscores the importance of selfless service and sharing with those in need. Guru Nanak emphasised the communal responsibility of caring for the less fortunate and promoting social welfare.
Major life works of Guru Nanak Dev
Travels (Udasis): Guru Nanak undertook four major journeys, known as Udasis, during his lifetime. These travels took him far and wide, spreading his message of love, equality, and devotion to God. His interactions with people from diverse backgrounds enriched the tapestry of his teachings.
Composition of Hymns (Bani): Guru Nanak’s hymns, captured in the Guru Granth Sahib, are a timeless treasure. His compositions, often sung in the form of kirtan, resonate with spiritual fervor and serve as a guiding force for Sikhs in their daily lives.
Establishment of Sikhism and Langar: Guru Nanak laid the foundation for Sikhism, establishing the core tenets and principles that would later be developed by the succeeding Gurus. He instituted the practice of langar, a community kitchen providing free meals to all, regardless of background, fostering the spirit of equality and fraternity.
Gurupurab as a continuation of Guru Nanak’s legacy
As Sikhs worldwide celebrate Gurupurab, they not only honor the birth of Guru Nanak Dev but also embrace the eternal wisdom he imparted. Gurupurab is a time for self-reflection, prayer, and a recommitment to the principles that Guru Nanak stood for.
His teachings, encapsulated in the Guru Granth Sahib, continue to illuminate the path of millions, providing solace, guidance, and a profound sense of purpose. Gurupurab is not just a celebration; it is a continuation of Guru Nanak’s legacy, reminding us to walk the path of truth, humility, and service to humanity.
