Education ministry initiates age alignment: instructs six-plus age for Grade 1 entry

In a significant move to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the Education Ministry has directed all states and Union territories to implement a six-plus age requirement for admission to Grade 1 starting from the upcoming 2024-25 academic session.

The directive, communicated through a letter from Archana Sharma Awasthi, Joint Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy, emphasises the need for a uniform approach across the nation.

The letter highlights the imminent commencement of the 2024-25 academic session, prompting the need for states and Union territories to ensure that the age for Grade 1 admission is set at six years and above.

This move aims to bring consistency to the educational system and is in line with the broader objectives outlined in the NEP 2020 and RTE Act, of 2009.
