National Education Day in India, celebrated on 11 November every year, holds immense significance as it commemorates the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a visionary leader and the first Education Minister of independent India. This day not only pays tribute to his contributions but also serves as a reminder of the pivotal role education plays in shaping a nation’s future.

Let us know the legend

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, an eminent scholar, freedom fighter, and a key architect of modern India, made remarkable contributions to the education sector.

Serving as the country’s first Education Minister from 1947 to 1958, Azad laid the foundation for a robust educational framework. His vision was not just limited to academic knowledge but extended to fostering a sense of unity and secularism among the diverse communities of India. Azad advocated for free and compulsory education for all, understanding the transformative power of knowledge in nation-building.

He championed the establishment of the University Grants Commission (UGC), aimed at maintaining the standards of higher education and ensuring adequate funding to universities.

Azad’s efforts in promoting education, especially among the marginalised sections, have left an indelible mark on India’s educational landscape, making him an icon of wisdom and enlightenment.

His belief that education should be the cornerstone of a progressive society continues to inspire generations of Indians. National Education Day stands as a testament to his enduring legacy, reminding us of the transformative power of education and the responsibility we all share in nurturing the minds of the future.

Few know that Azad was also a beautiful poet. Remembering the man with a shayari that explains his persona the most:

“Huun Narm Dil Ke Dost Maanke Ro Diya

Dushman Ne Bhi Jab Apni Musibat Bayaan Ki”

Perhaps the great man tries to remind the world through this couplet that the end result of all education should be a kind world that stems from a kind heart. Education should help us better ourselves and in the process reform the world. We all, as eternal students, must learn this lesson and practice it in our daily life!
