The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the class XII English exam on February 22, 2024. The question paper was divided into three sections.

Section A: Reading skills – total makers 22

Section B: Creative writing skills – total marks 18

Section C: Literature and Supplementary Reading Textbook – total marks 40

The total question paper was 80 marks; 20 marks are from international assessments.

According to Kuldeep Singh, PGT (English) at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, the overall question paper was moderate but was slightly challenging to attempt the paper and shared the following analysis of the question paper.

Both the questions were of superb content and subject matter. It was strictly as per the mock question paper issued by CBSE months back. “The combination of MCQs and very short answers was followed properly. I have gone through all three sets of the question papers,” Singh shared

Writing section questions were the same as per the prescribed syllabus and the mock question papers. There was a little bit of variation in the three sets. Comparatively, it was easier than the Reading Section questions.

The Literature Section had a splendid set of questions. The questions were not asked directly. Maximum questions were text-based experiences and comparative statements across the lessons.

“There were some minor changes in some of the questions in all three sets. This year some questions required textual analysis across different textual lessons. Although the questions were from the prescribed syllabus, like the past practices, the questions were not direct and simple,” Singh said and added that CBSE always makes sure that the question paper’s difficulty level demands the attention of average students with a balance of easy, moderate and one or two hard questions.

“Some students found the Literature Section simple to answer. Some were unhappy with the Reading Section, especially the Unseen Comprehension Passages. The vocabulary used was also above the level of average students,” Singh said.

Overall, almost all the students managed to attempt the entire question paper without leaving a single question unanswered. “They were optimistic about securing excellent marks,” Singh said in conclusion.
