BeyondBooks: ‘Sketching makes me relaxed, focused & creative’

He is a Class IX student at Apeejay School, Kharghar, who loves exploring his creative side through dancing, sketching, and playing football. He is passionate about expressing himself through these activities and enjoys spending time doing them. Meet Shubhaang Mahapatra, who started sketching a few years ago. In a candid interview, he talks about how his father’s sketching and painting always fascinated him, and this passion for art has definitely rubbed off on him!

Do you have a favourite subject or theme you like to sketch?

While I don’t have a specific favourite subject, I enjoy sketching a variety of things, especially nature and landscapes. As I mentioned, my father is definitely a big influence on my drawing style. I also draw inspiration from various styles that I come across online or in books.

What materials do you usually use for your sketches (pencil, charcoal, and ink)?

I usually prefer using pencils for my sketches. However, I’m excited to explore other options like charcoal and ink in the near future. I think it will be great to experiment with different materials and see how they can enhance my sketches.

Is there a technique or style you are currently trying to improve?

I’m always looking to improve my shading and texture techniques. I find it challenging but rewarding to create depth and dimension in my sketches. I’m practising regularly to get better at it.

Which sketch are you most proud of, and why?

It’s hard to pick just one, but I think I’m most proud of a sketch I did of a landscape. The sketch turned out better than I expected. I gifted the same to my grandmother, and she had it framed and displayed it in her living room.

How does sketching make you feel — relaxed, focused, or creative?

Sketching makes me feel all three! It’s a great way for me to relax and unwind, especially after a long day at school. It also helps me focus and concentrate on the details. Most importantly, it allows me to express my creativity.

Would you like to explore related fields such as painting, digital art, or design?

I’d love to explore painting, digital art, and design. I think it would be amazing to learn new skills and techniques in these areas.

How does the school/teachers support you?

My school and teachers are supportive of my interests and hobbies. They encourage me to pursue my passions and provide opportunities for me to showcase my work. My art teacher, in particular, has been helpful in guiding me and giving me feedback on my sketches.
