‘Behind the smiles’: Poem by Arica Batta, Apeejay School, Saket

A small child; a carefree soul
With no idea about the outside world
Slowly grows up and gets to know
The terrifying experience untold
So to express her thoughts
She wrote all her insecurities, gloominess
With a smile covers it all,
Behind that happy face lies a sad soul.
“How are you?” people ask.
“I’m good,”and we hide again.
Judgment comes with a deep impact inside
Ever tried asking the victims—how they survive.
It’s not easy for everyone,
But somehow, we’ve all mastered it.
Height, weight, appearance—
Do they truly define your worth?
Letting people down is so common these days,
Yet the victims carry a bundle of unspoken thoughts.
And when no one cares to listen,
silence becomes their voice—
Louder than the noise
Of a thousand careless thoughts.
Fake sympathy, even that feels rare.
So, dear people, don’t worry.
Be yourself.
Let people talk,
Let them shout.
Stand tall—
And be you, no matter what.
