Helik Jairath from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar has the ideal dual talent. He can draw and paint with his words and also with his pencil and paint brush. He has already been interviewed as part of the Apeejay Promising Poet series.
However, it is his artistic skills that have made him a perfect fit for Apeejay Aspiring Artist interview. Let us read what the multi-talented boy has to say:
Read edited excerpts:
Since when did you start drawing Helik?
I started drawing when I was 13 years old. It was during the lockdown that I picked up the brush as I wanted to obtain various skills and polish myself with all the free time in my hand. I started out by drawing portraits and later I began enjoying other art forms.
So which art form do you like the most and why?
I do not have any favourite art form. But I’m truly an admirer of the renaissance period. The minutely detailed pieces like ‘The Creation of Adam’ and ‘The Last Supper’ are truly some of the best works in the history of art. These inspire me and fill my mind with more will to create beautiful art.
How does your school support you as an artist?
I get a lot of support from the school via different activities across all fields be it academics, sports or any other co-curricular activities. They always appreciate my artistic skills and encourage me.

If we asked what is art in 2 lines, what would you say?
It is often said that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and it is true. Art is also a thing of beauty. But the beauty of that material cannot be recognised by every individual. Art lives in the beauty of the onlooker’s soul.
How much time does it take you to complete an artwork? What are the common ideas and themes?
It actually depends upon my mood. Sometimes it takes me just 2 hours and sometimes more than a week. For my ideas and references, I often consult the internet.
Any upcoming artworks?
Nothing major as of yet. Maybe I will get some spark when I surf the net next.
A new artform you wish to learn?
I would love to learn oil painting. It’s a very great medium and represents a lot. I’m practising water colours now, so it would be oil paintings after that.
In addition to art, any other hobbies?
Apart from art, I do poetry and write stories as you know. I’m also learning music as well as dance.
