‘Art is fun-tastic,’ says this budding painter

Ours is a curious old world. Here, over time, words acquire a different meaning of their own. Such as Shakespeare now symbolises English language and literature (by the way did you know that today is World English Language Day that is celebrated in honour of William Shakespeares’ birth and death anniversary, yes both on the same day). In quite a similar fashion, thanks to chasing excellence over decades – Apeejay symbolises unbelievable talent.

And Bhargavi Nallewar is a perfect example of this case. Just a class 6 student at Apeejay School, Kharghar and she already paints like a pro. So, let’s take a look at her multi-faced painting and I’m sure you’d say this is the work of a middle aged artist.

Selected in this week’s Aspiring Artist interview, Bhargavi takes us through the BTS (behind the scene) in her mind as she approaches the canvas and also shares how her school helps her improve with each passing day. Read edited excerpts:

Bhargavi, since when have you been drawing?

I started drawing when I was as little as 5 years old. I made some cute but silly little drawings and
have loved doing the same since then.

How lovely! So tell us which art form is your favorite?

Art by itself is such a powerful means of expression where each form further has its own magic. So, it is tough to choose but still if I have to say, my favorite is visual and
performing arts.

And how does your school support you as an artist?

Apeejay Kharghar plays a crucial role in nurturing my creativity. My art teachers Nagina Ma’am, Meghna ma’am and my dance teacher Avitha ma’am, have always encouraged the artist in me and this reassurance and love in turn has nurtured the artist in me. They
have always guided me and are like my guiding light.

Explain to us what art means to you?

Art is fun-tastic! I am in the happiest state of mind when I am painting or dancing. I get lost in the world of imagination when I hold the brush and rightly said by Picasso, “Everything you imagine is real”.

What an answer champ! Do tell us how much time it takes you to complete an artwork? What are your selected themes?

It all depends on what I choose to make. Some sketches take a few hours but others like painting on the canvas takes a couple of hours and a few sittings. Some of the themes I am currently into are mythological legends and landscapes.

Upcoming artworks?

I would love to try my hands on every kind of painting, be it acrylic or oil painting. My upcoming artwork will comprise mythological art based on Ajanta and Ellora murals. I would also be doing some Warli art work which is characterised by simple geometric shapes like circles, triangles and lines.

A new artform you wish to learn?

I want to explore music and poetry soon. They really take the listener to a different world altogether.

And lastly, other interests than art?

I love dance and I would really love to try learning piano. My brother plays amazing piano and I am planning to learn to play piano from him.
