The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme is globally recognised to not only foster academic excellence but also place significant emphasis on a student’s character development and life-long relationships. Recently, an inspiring workshop themed ‘Interpersonal Relationships’ was conducted at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park for the Primary-Years-Programme (PYP) and Middle-Years-Programme (MYP) segment. This workshop underlined the IB’s dedication to equipping students with skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

In today’s fast-paced world, where digital communication often takes precedence, teaching children the art of forming meaningful relationships has never been more crucial. Therefore, the workshop aimed to underscore the significance of these relationships, highlighting their role in achieving happiness, a concept supported by extensive research. In an era marked by increasing isolation and disconnection, the ability to cultivate and sustain genuine connections is undoubtedly an invaluable skill.
The PYP workshop focused on encouraging students to engage in constant self-reflection. It prompted them to consider their actions and their impact on the feelings of those around them. This self-awareness is a cornerstone of the IB curriculum, which promotes a learner profile that includes attributes like being principled, caring, and reflective. By fostering the idea that our actions are within our control, students were guided towards understanding the power they hold in shaping their interpersonal relationships. It further highlighted the importance of active listening and adhering to social norms, essential skills for developing healthy connections.

For the MYP students, the workshop delved deeper into the distinction between reacting and responding in interpersonal relationships. This is a critical aspect of the IB’s approach to education, which encourages students to become thinkers and communicators. By teaching students to be intentional in their interactions, the workshop empowered them to make thoughtful choices in their relationships, rather than reacting impulsively. This ability to respond thoughtfully aligns with the IB’s objective of nurturing open-minded and balanced individuals.
To solidify the importance of interpersonal relationships in the school’s ethos, students were introduced to the school’s behaviour policy, which is grounded in a restorative approach. This reflects the curriculum’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, where conflicts are resolved constructively, and relationships are mended rather than broken.
As an additional tool for nurturing positive relationships, students were given a kindness calendar for the following month. This calendar encouraged them to perform at least one random act of kindness every day, reinforcing the idea that kindness is a key ingredient in successful relationships.
Why are such workshops imperative in today’s educational landscape? Children often make common mistakes in school, including misunderstandings, conflicts, and even bullying. These issues can stem from a lack of understanding of human relationships and the inability to navigate them effectively. By concentrating on interpersonal relationships from an early age, educators can help students recognise the impact of their actions on others and develop empathy, a fundamental skill for resolving conflicts and fostering harmonious communities.

To strengthen bonds within the school environment, students can employ several strategies. First, active listening and empathy should be encouraged. This means not only hearing what others say but genuinely understanding their feelings and perspectives. Second, students should be taught to communicate openly and honestly, sharing their thoughts and emotions with their peers. Third, they can seek guidance and support from their educators, who can serve as valuable mentors in their journey to understanding human relationships.
The workshop not only empowered students to cultivate meaningful connections but also equipped them with skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. By prioritising these skills, educators can enhance their academic success and also nurture responsible and empathetic global citizens, ready to make a positive impact on the world. In today’s rapidly changing landscape, these qualities are more valuable than ever, ensuring that young minds are not just successful but also socially conscious and compassionate individuals.
