In an effort to combat environmental degradation and prioritise health, students and faculty members of Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram, under the leadership of National Service Scheme (NSS), took a proactive stand against the use of firecrackers this Deepawali and for future celebrations.

Deepawali, traditionally a festival of lights, has unfortunately become synonymous with the acrid fumes produced by firecrackers. According to a report, the pollution generated on one Deepawali night equals that of an entire year. Harmful substances like SO2, CO2, and dust, as well as toxic chemicals like phosphorus and ammonium nitrate, are released into the air, leading to severe health problems.

The community at the university recognised the need for change and initiated a pledge to say no to crackers, promoting a festival that is both joyous and eco-friendly. The pledge encouraged individuals to take responsibility for their families and their city by abstaining from bursting firecrackers.

Individuals within the Apeejay Stya University community responded with a resolute pledge to transform the festival into a beacon of sustainability and well-being. A notable commitment came from members who said, “I pledge to enjoy a festival of lights during this Deepawali that future generations will want to emulate. I commit to refraining from lighting any firecrackers and will actively spread awareness in my neighborhood about the adverse effects of noise pollution, high decibel levels, and air pollution caused by burning sulfates and nitrates.”

To replace the dazzling but polluting display of fireworks, the participants planned to illuminate their home with the warm glow of diyas and candles, accompanied by vibrant rangolis. This approach brought beauty to the celebration without contributing to the momentary bursts of light in the sky that release harmful substances into the atmosphere.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff alike, signifying a collective commitment to making Deepawali celebrations more sustainable. The initiative aligned with the university’s ethos of promoting environmental consciousness and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the community.

By taking this pledge, the Apeejay Stya University community aimed to set an example for others, encouraging a shift towards greener and healthier celebrations during festive seasons. The emphasis was on creating a Deepawali that not only brings joy but also contributes to a cleaner and safer environment for everyone.
