Acing an interview is crucial to stand out in a competitive job market, demonstrate your skills and qualifications, and secure the job offer you desire. It’s an opportunity to showcase your best self and leave a positive and lasting impression on the employer. This requires preparation, confidence, and effective communication.
As an employee preparing for an interview, you can use several tips and tricks to make a positive impression and increase your chances of getting the job. Instead of just listing your responsibilities, focus on your achievements in previous roles. Use specific examples to demonstrate how you added value to your previous employers.
One great way to come out a winner when it comes to acing an interview is to use storytelling to showcase your skills in an interview. This is a powerful way to showcase your skills and experiences in a memorable and engaging manner.
And how can you do this? Here are some steps
Identify relevant stories: Think about your previous experiences and accomplishments that align with the skills required for the job. Choose stories that highlight your problem-solving abilities, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, or any other skills relevant to the position.
Structure your stories: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your stories. Start by setting the context (Situation), describe the specific challenge or task (Task), explain the actions you took to address it (Action), and conclude with the positive outcome (Result).
Keep it concise: While storytelling is effective, be mindful of the interview’s time constraints. Keep your stories succinct and to the point.
Be specific: Provide details and quantifiable results whenever possible. Specifics add credibility and help the interviewer understand the impact of your actions.
Be authentic and relatable: Share your stories in a genuine and relatable manner. Let your personality shine through while demonstrating your skills.
Practice storytelling: Rehearse your stories beforehand to ensure they flow smoothly and effectively convey your skills. Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror.
Choose diverse stories: Use different stories for various skills you want to highlight. This showcases your versatility and adaptability in different scenarios.
Connect stories to the job: Whenever you share a story, explicitly tie it back to the skills required for the job. Explain how the experience demonstrates your suitability for the position.
Engage the interviewer: As you tell your stories, pay attention to the interviewer’s reactions. If you notice positive engagement, continue with confidence.
Be adaptable: Be prepared to adjust your storytelling approach based on the interviewer’s communication style and level of interest.
By using storytelling effectively, you can make a lasting impression on the interviewer while showcasing your skills in a compelling and memorable way. It humanises your experiences and helps the interviewer understand how you can contribute to the organisation.
Let’s take an example
Interviewer: Tell me about a challenging situation you faced at your previous job and how you handled it.
Candidate: Certainly! In my previous role as a project manager, we were working on a critical client project with a tight deadline. One day, we encountered a major technical issue that threatened to delay the entire project. The client was becoming increasingly concerned, and it put a lot of pressure on our team to find a solution quickly.
Situation (S): The project involved developing a complex software application for a client, and we were in the final testing phase before the delivery date.
Task (T): My task was to lead the troubleshooting efforts and ensure we resolved the issue without compromising the project timeline or the quality of the deliverables.
Action (A): I immediately gathered the development team, and we conducted a thorough root cause analysis to identify the source of the problem. It turned out to be a compatibility issue between two critical components of the application. To address it, we needed to rewrite a significant portion of the code.
Result (R): Understanding the urgency, I reallocated resources from non-critical tasks and restructured our work schedule to accommodate the additional development efforts. We worked long hours and collaborated closely to ensure everyone was on the same page. As a result of our collective efforts, we were able to resolve the technical issue within two days, well ahead of the original deadline and the client was impressed by our quick response and the quality of the solution.
Connection to skills: This experience demonstrated my problem-solving skills and ability to handle high-pressure situations. I remained calm under pressure, organised the team effectively, and ensured clear communication throughout the process. The successful resolution of the issue not only saved the project but also strengthened our relationship with the client.
Here, the candidate effectively showcases their problem-solving skills, teamwork, and ability to handle challenges in a real-life work situation via storytelling. The interviewer gains valuable insights into the candidate’s capabilities, making the interview more engaging and memorable.
