She is, at present, studying in Class VI at Apeejay School, Kharghar. She enjoys performing during the school’s annual events, especially during the 2025-26 Annual Appreciation Day, where the dance was about Mother. Academically, too, she is doing well in her studies, scoring a 93 per cent last year. Meet Jeeya Vasani.

In a candid interview, she talks about how she has been learning hip-hop and Bollywood styles since she was six years old, among other things.

When did you first become interested in dance?

I became interested in dance when I was very young. I used to watch dance videos and reality shows and try to copy the moves. My mother noticed that I was good at dancing, so she enrolled me in dance classes.

Which dance style do you enjoy more, hip hop or Bollywood?

I enjoy Bollywood dance more than hip hop because Bollywood has many expressions and storytelling. Hip hop is more energetic, while Bollywood has grace and different kinds of expressions.

Is there a performance that felt really special to you?

Recently, I participated in an international dance competition called Hip Hop International, which was held in India this year. I performed on stage with four other members of my group. It was exciting, but I was a little nervous because it was a big stage and our first time performing there.

What did you learn from performing on such a big stage?

While we didn’t win anything, I learnt that we should always stay positive. Before our performance, another group also faced a problem with their music. We crossed our fingers hoping it didn’t happen to us. Unfortunately, it did. We realised that such things can happen, so it is important to remain positive and keep going.

What were some of the challenges you faced while learning dance?

One of the main challenges is learning new steps and recognising them quickly. It is also important to catch the beats and the speed of the routine and move accordingly.

Is there any dancer or choreographer who inspires you?

I feel inspired by Madhuri Dixit. There is a song of hers that I really love, and it is my favourite. I have watched it so many times that I have lost count!

How does your school support your passion for dance?

My school supports me by providing opportunities to participate in events, cultural programmes, and annual functions. These opportunities help me perform on stage and gain confidence.
