Abbas Hasnain, a Class XII non-medical student and the Head Boy of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, recently made his school proud by securing the second prize at the prestigious Dr. Stya Paul Inter-School English Debate hosted by Apeejay School, Noida. With a sharp mind, a love for research, and excellent oratory skills, Abbas impressed the judges with his critical stance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on human creativity. In this conversation, he shares his preparation journey, inspirations, and aspirations.

Read edited excerpts:

What was the topic of the debate and what stance did you take?

The topic focused on whether AI is eroding human ingenuity. I spoke against the motion, asserting that yes, AI is indeed diminishing our natural creative abilities. I highlighted how excessive reliance on technology is leading us away from critical thinking and problem-solving – key aspects of human ingenuity.

What were the main arguments that helped you win?

I backed my points with strong data. For instance, I cited a Harvard study showing that 90% of students use generative AI and that 1 in 4 students skip real class readings because of it. I also referred to the World Economic Forum’s estimate that 85 million jobs will disappear by the end of this year. I made it clear that while AI may create new jobs, the current workforce may not be adequately skilled to take them up. I ended with a powerful metaphor: A brush paints your idea; AI generates hundreds of its own.

How did you prepare for the competition?

I started by researching online for relevant data. Then, I drew from my personal experiences and observations, especially about how AI is affecting students like me. I also sought feedback from my English teacher who guided me throughout with reviewing drafts, improving my content, and helping me refine the structure.

How do you use AI in your daily life?

I use AI for summarising complex topics, gathering quick information, and creating basic drafts for projects. However, I ensure that it doesn’t replace actual learning.

Are you involved in other school activities too?

Yes, I’m the Head Boy, and I’ve been actively involved in Model UN conferences. I was Secretary General last year and President this year. I’m also part of our tech club, and regularly participate in debates and inter-school tech fests. In sports, I’ve played inter-house cricket and basketball, our team won first place this year!
