Did you know that the government designated June 29 as National Statistics Day in recognition of the contributions made by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (Father of Indian Statistics) in the fields of Statistics and Economic planning on June 5, 2007? Its purpose is to increase the overall awareness of the public regarding the role and application of statistics in the socio-economic development plans as well as promote the idea of utilising statistical tools and methods to solve real-life problems.
The term ‘Statistics’ comes from the modern Latin phrase statisticum collegium; it means the collection and classification of data. The word is also referred to as Grammar of Science as coined by Karl Pearson, a British Mathematician.

According to Naresh Marwaha, HoD, Mathematics (Secondary Level) Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, this day highlights the importance of Statistics in National Planning, Development, and Informed Decision-making. “Professor Mahalanobis introduced Mahalanobis Distance in 1936 which is a statistical formula commonly used in Chemometrics to measure the distance between a point and a distribution based on multiple dimension measurements. This means that subject is anything but boring or monotonous as some students may find,” the educator said and shared areas where Statistics comes in handy.
