Shreya Aggarwal is a class 8 student at Apeejay School, Noida. She is a very spirited young poet with a million dreams in her heart just as she described it in her poem. And her dreams fuel her with the strength to ‘touch the sky’. Selected as this week’s Promising Poet, let us know what Shreya has to say about poetry, rhyme and golden afternoons that propel her imagination. Read edited excerpts:
At what age did you start writing poetry?
Poetry found its way into my heart at the tender age of 11. Although my journey with storytelling began much earlier, tracing back to as long as my memory can reach.
What inspired you to write poems?
The spark for poetry ignited within me when I caught wind of Apeejay Newsroom seeking entries for scholar journalists. The prospect of contributing to this great platform led me to pen my inaugural poem, thereby setting the stage for a budding passion.
Tell us the thought behind your poem ‘A Million Dreams’?
‘A Million Dreams’ materialised in a burst of inspiration, coaxing me to put pen to paper. This poem resonates with the pursuit of our aspirations, encouraging resilience against the pull of naysayers and obstacles.
Who is your favourite poet, and what is your favourite poem?
Among the vast realm of verses, Sir Walter Scott’s Lochinvar stands tall as one of my cherished favorites, weaving a timeless tale through poetic mastery.
The all time question: rhyme or free verse?
While my current repertoire leans towards rhyming poems, the allure of free verse beckons, a terrain I aspire to explore in my poetic journey.
Writing poems in the day or night?
The sunlit afternoons offer me a canvas of leisure, a time when inspiration flows freely, and ideas dance vividly in my imagination, guiding the birth of my poetic creations.
How does your school help you write such lovely poems?
Apeejay Newsroom website serves as a gateway to endless possibilities, infusing me with encouragement and motivation to keep my poetic ink flowing. The platform nurtures an environment that fosters creativity and expression.
How do you approach writing a poem? How much time does it take you to finish one and what are your common writing themes?
My process involves immersion in new words, synonyms, and rhythmic explorations, consuming about an hour. While I don’t confine myself to common themes, the bounties of nature consistently inspire my verses.
And finally, the best thing about writing poetry for you?
Writing poetry is my portal to an imaginary realm, where characters, scenes, and places of my creation come alive. It’s a cathartic journey, allowing me to delve into a world uniquely mine, brimming with vivid imagination and expression.
