5 natural remedies to soothe mosquito bites

Mosquito bites are not only annoying but can also cause itching, swelling, and discomfort. While commercial products like creams and sprays can provide relief, natural remedies offer alternative solutions that are often gentle on the skin and free from harsh chemicals. 

On this World Malaria Day, let’s check out five natural remedies that will help you fight mosquito bites:

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is renowned for its soothing properties and is commonly used to alleviate skin irritation. Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to the mosquito bite to reduce itching and inflammation. The cooling effect of aloe vera helps to numb the area and provides instant relief. Additionally, aloe vera possesses antibacterial properties that can prevent infection and promote faster healing.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal is another natural ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent remedy for soothing mosquito bites. Prepare a paste by mixing oatmeal with water and apply it to the affected area. Allow the paste to dry before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Oatmeal helps to relieve itching and reduces swelling, making it a popular choice for sensitive skin.

Baking Soda: Baking soda is a versatile ingredient with numerous household uses, including providing relief from mosquito bites. Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water and apply it to the affected area. Baking soda helps to neutralise the pH of the skin, which reduces itching and irritation. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties help to alleviate swelling and redness associated with mosquito bites.

Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is renowned for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective remedy for mosquito bite relief. Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil and apply it to the mosquito bite using a cotton swab. Tea tree oil helps to reduce itching, swelling, and redness while preventing infection. However, it’s essential to perform a patch test before using tea tree oil, as it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

Ice Pack: Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the mosquito bite can provide immediate relief from itching and inflammation. The cold temperature helps to numb the area and constrict blood vessels, reducing swelling and discomfort. Wrap ice cubes in a cloth or use a pre-made ice pack and apply it to the affected area for 10-15 minutes. Repeat as needed throughout the day for continued relief.

Keep in mind that these insects are more active in the evening and at night. So to savour a summer evening outdoors without mosquito bites, cover up and avoid stagnant water.
