When we think of creative careers – be it design, media, writing, or advertising – what comes to mind? Bold ideas? Wild imagination? Beautiful sketches? While all of that is true, there’s one lesser-known but absolutely essential ingredient: research.
Yes, research.
In fact, many successful professionals say that 70% of their creative work involves research, and only 30% goes into the actual creation. Surprised? Let’s unpack that.

What does research look like in creative work?
Research in creative careers isn’t just about reading textbooks. It’s about understanding people, cultures, history, trends, and even technology. A fashion designer, for instance, studies fabrics, seasons, and the preferences of different countries. A content creator checks what the audience wants. A product designer explores user needs.
As Namita Mahajan, an Apeejay School, Faridabad alumni and a senior design professional who works with global fashion brands, puts it,“Most of my time goes into researching what works where – like what sells in Europe vs what sells in India. You can’t guess. You have to know.”

Why it matters for students
If you’re a student dreaming of a creative career, don’t just focus on developing talent – build your research muscle.
Here’s how you can start:
Observe your surroundings – what are people wearing, using, or talking about?
Ask questions – Why are trends changing? What do people really need?
Dig deeper – Read case studies, watch documentaries, explore cultures.
Creativity doesn’t live in a vacuum. It grows when it’s fed by information, insight, and understanding. Whether you’re planning to enter fashion, media, tech, or design – remember:
Ideas are everywhere, but great ideas come from great research.
