Good communication begins with small, everyday choices: listening when someone speaks, greeting them politely, and choosing words that show respect. These were the ideas at the centre of a workshop on Effective Communication and Daily Etiquettes for Classes III to V at Apeejay School, Noida. Conducted by the English Department of the Primary Department, the session aimed to help children communicate effectively and practise kindness and polite behaviour in daily interactions.
Listening is part of communication
The workshop opened with a discussion about communication in daily life. Students learnt that it involves more than speaking. Listening carefully, responding appropriately, and helping others feel respected and valued matter too. The discussion encouraged them to think about the conversations they have with classmates and teachers each day.

Through questions and interactive situations, the children considered how to greet teachers, friends, and new people. They learnt how a pleasant tone, a smile, and respectful words can make a greeting more thoughtful.
The session also revisited the magic words: Please, Thank You, Sorry and Excuse Me. Everyday examples showed how these words express politeness, gratitude, and respect.

Putting good manners into practice
Teachers used role-plays to explore what it means to respect others and be a good friend. Their demonstrations covered helping and encouraging friends, sharing, listening without interrupting, taking turns, playing fairly, and including everyone. The familiar situations made appropriate ways of speaking and behaving easier for students to understand.
An interactive recap and a short video on Good Manners brought the workshop to a close. Students enthusiastically revisited five messages: greet kindly, use magic words, listen carefully, respect others and be a good friend.
The practical examples gave students ways to communicate with confidence and courtesy. They also connected everyday manners with kindness, empathy, respect, cooperation, and positive behaviour towards others.
