Read a delightful poem on the Indian freedom struggle that has come from the pen of a class 10 student. Chitraksh Soi of Apeejay School, Noida is enjoying writing poems at the moment as well as growing with every rhyme and line. In this week’s Promising Poet interview, the budding poet speaks about his writing schedule and also gives some fruitful advice for fellow writers.
At what age did you start writing poetry?
I started writing poetry early, from the age of 10.
What inspired you to write poems?
Reading the poems of great poets such as Rabindranath Tagore, Robert Frost, and William Shakespeare.
Impressive! So tell us about the thought behind your poem on ‘Indian freedom?
It is a short poem about India’s struggle for independence. I have written it with my best efforts, choosing words carefully and describing the nation’s struggle in a short and engaging way.
Favourite poet and poem?
Robert Frost and his iconic poem Road Not Taken. It simply moves me so much!
Rhyme or free verse?
My liking is more into rhyme as it adds so much beauty to the poem.
Writing poems in the day or night?
I prefer writing poems at night. It gives me more space to express my emotion and makes the poem deeper.
How does your school help you to write such lovely poems?
My school motivates me by holding regular poetry competitions and this creates a creative atmosphere. For this I am grateful!

How do you approach writing a poem? What are your common writing themes?
I approach writing a poem by thinking deep about the topic at hand and then letting my feelings as well as thoughts settle on the page. It takes me roughly 2-3 days to write a poem. My common writing themes include emotions such as greed, jealousy and happiness.
One advice for budding poets?
Poetry is not only about the beauty of words or writing with great vocabulary. It is also about inner beauty and deep meaning. So one’s words should come out from the heart

It helps to put my philosophy and emotions on paper and acts as a great stress buster.
