The transition from classrooms to the corporate world seemed daunting to her, filled with obstacles and challenges. That was her initial perception before she became a part of a PR family. However, her journey since she became a professional has been nothing short of delightful. Meet Arya Thakur, an alumna of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC) who is working with Adfactors PR as an Associate Account Executive.

In a candid interview, Arya, who pursued a PG Diploma, Corporate Communication/Public Relations and Event Management programme talks about her fond memories at AIMC and the supportive faculty.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m at present, working at Adfactors based out of Delhi. I am an Associate Account Executive here. The work involves sending morning updates and radars to clients, making reports (weekly or monthly), and engaging in media outreach, which includes calling the media.

How did you land this job? Did you get it through the placement cell of AIMC?

Yes, I got this job through the AIMC placement cell. The institute played a significant role in preparing me for the interview. Mock interviews conducted by the department head and other faculty members, along with insights on what is required for the role; were immensely helpful. The faculty that taught us Public Relations was extremely helpful. They taught me how to conduct myself, what to expect during the interview, and how to address the questions.

What makes PR so interesting to you? Did you always want a career in this field?

Surprisingly, I initially wanted to become a doctor and even prepared for a medical career. However, I discovered my interest in writing and communication, leading me to choose communicative English during my bachelor’s. Public relations became an area of interest, and that’s how I found my way into this field.

How and when did you come to know about AIMC, and why did you choose this institute?

I learnt about AIMC through a guest lecture during COVID-19 when I was attending virtual graduate classes back in Patna. The faculty member’s insight about the institute proved interesting. I also did a lot of research of my own that revealed AIMC’s strong alumni network, further influencing my decision to join the institute.

Was it challenging to transition from Patna to Delhi?

The transition wasn’t too challenging for me as I had spent three-four years in Delhi before. However, the shift from being a pampered child to an independent person in Delhi posed its own set of challenges, especially living in a PG and managing everything on my own.

Can you share some fond college memories?

College memories include building strong friendships, participating in Film Festival events, and overcoming my introverted nature. Engaging in fun activities and exploring places with friends created lasting memories. Also, I managed to make several friends so we used to have plenty of fun together.

In your experience in the PR industry, what traits do you think are essential for excelling in this field?

Few people understand that challenges are part and parcel of working in this industry. Hence, PR professionals need to be open to challenges, meet deadlines, manage expectations, and work effectively in teams. It’s a dynamic profession that requires adaptability and a positive approach to challenges.

What skills did you learn at AIMC that have helped you in your job?

The teamwork and collaborative skills developed during group brand case studies at AIMC have been crucial. Learning to think creatively and plan effectively has proven valuable in my work.

Based on your experience, would you recommend AIMC to other students, and what advice would you give them?

I would recommend AIMC to other students. There have been a couple of students to whom I have recommended this institute. The one-year PG diploma course, especially in event management, provides a well-rounded education. My advice would be to embrace teamwork, think creatively, and be open to the challenges that come with a career in public relations.
