Have you ever experienced the sheer enchantment of a live performance, so riveting that the very thought of blinking seemed an unwarranted distraction? In the age of digital entertainment, the opportunity to witness such captivating shows in person is not just a privilege but a rare luxury. And when the spectacle is crafted through the dedicated efforts of both students and teachers, the result is nothing short of phenomenal. Such was the spellbinding narrative woven by the talented students of Apeejay’s IB school during an Annual Musical evening on December 16, 2023.

Apeejay School International (ASI), Panchsheel Park, presented a whimsical transformation of the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, which unfolded in the form of the much-anticipated musical, Once Upon a Mattress. This enchanting rendition was a comedic romp, weaving together humour, love, and unexpected twists. This musical spectacle was curated under the esteemed patronage of Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Education, and Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Mr. Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya and Svran Group, and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Nisha Berlia.

Dr. V.S. Garg, Senior Education Advisor at Apeejay Education, and Mrs. Vandana Swaika, wife of Dr. Adarsh Swaika, Ambassador of the Embassy of India, Kuwait, graced the occasion with their presence. The gathering also saw the participation of members from Apeejay Education’s sister schools and other esteemed office bearers.

Speaking at the event, Mr Purshottam Dutt Vashist, Principal, ASI shared, “The musical is set to redefine the social narrative of women. Challenging patriarchal norms and several gender-related expectations often tied to the fairer sex, the musical strives to give women voice and agency. Our students have worked hard and are eager to showcase their magic on the stage. So, sit tight and enjoy the show!”

Next, Vedha Jangir, Head Girl of the school, introduced the play to the audience. She stated how it revolves around the theme of love and social expectations where ‘happily ever after’ takes a delightful turn.

In a kingdom where love is held hostage until a suitable bride is found for the prince, the test for true royalty was ingeniously reimagined. Moreover, the musical challenged societal expectations from women set to betrothed. As the stage was established, the audience was transported into a world where absurd trials by Queen Aggravain, the silent antics of King Sextimus, and a delightful cast of characters captivated hearts and tickled funny bones. Princess Winnifred, a spirited swamp-dweller whose unrefined charm threatened to turn the kingdom, left the audience in treat for laughter-inducing escapades.

The show was poised to be a visual and auditory feast for the senses. The commitment to the arts at ASI was palpable, with a rich tradition of hosting annual plays that showcase the extraordinary talents of the students. On the big day, the hard work and dedication of ASI was evident in every nuance, every note, and every meticulously crafted set piece.

Each visual presented on stage was not merely breath-taking; it was a thought-provoking masterpiece. The creativity displayed in the sets, the precision in choreography, and the harmony in musical renditions reflected the sheer brilliance of the students. The school’s dedication to presenting high-quality theatrical experiences was undoubtedly praiseworthy.

Closing the day, Tejas Kapil, Head Boy of the school proposed the Vote of Thanks. He commended the efforts of the school’s team, staff, teachers, students and parents for a great evening.

‘Once Upon a Mattress’ was not merely a theatrical production; it was an immersive journey into a world where passion, dedication, and artistic brilliance converge. Nothing short of a theatrical masterpiece, the show displayed the unconquerable spirit of the students and the commitment of the school.
